Oh, here they are. Please have your duplicate thread removed. And it looks like someone played with a little acid.
I don't think any part of the original coin has been removed; looks much more like something was added on top, something like solder or epoxy, etc. If some metal had been removed, you would not see "D ST" and "F DOLLAR," in clear unobstructed lettering.
Looks like solder to me. It even has flux residue around the edges. May have been soldered to a belt buckle or the like. Does the front show wear?
Thank you everyone for your input. The front has hardly any wear. I found it in my father in laws old things and just wanted to be sure.
It's heavy by 2 Grams ?? Redbook says clad quarters weigh 5.7 grams, so it's heavy by 6 grams. That's more than double the normal weight, which doesn't seem possible, so maybe the scale's inaccurate. More likely you looked up the weight for a clad half dollar, 11.7 grams is about right.
