What happened to LIBERTY? 1838 Seated Liberty Half Dime

    I saw this on eBay today. What happened the the word "LIBERTY" on the shield? Re-engraved maybe?

    Got a close-up? Without a closer view I suspect a fake. To be fair, with a closer view I might have the same opinion.

    Looks like someone did a very poor tooling job then cleaned it.

    These are the only two photos the seller provided. And if anyone's wondering, I didn't touch it with a 5 ft. pole for the evident cleaning alone.

    Looks tooled to me. Notice the vertical lines (pale gules) in the shield. They also look tooled by someone with no skill.

    Looks messed with I'd say. Need a better picture. If you cannot get a better image I'd pass.
