That is quite a nice coin. While $75 may seem over the top for a 1965 in MS (SP) 66, and it most cases it is, it is waived when the buyer really cares about the coin and greatly wants it. I think many people on GC have more money than they know what to do with, and they spend it on stuff like this, but you do occasionally get the diehard collector that loves what they buy to the Andromeda and back.

LOL, I need to find out how the toning occurred like this! There's some weirdly serious money to be made.

 

More Missed Items - and this one is kinda.... weirdly shocking!


1956, PF-68 RD, 4 coins - total $110 with Buyer's Fee. CDNs of $260/360, and individual coins were selling for $35+ tonight. Mine were $27.50 each, aka likely an easy $200.


1982-P Nickel, MS66, $20 w/Buyer's Fee. CDNs of $70/95. Scarce date in MS that I could easily get $50-60 out of from one of my LCS's.


1955 Dime, PF69 NGC, $70.50 w/Buyer's Fee. CDNs of $120/155.


1897-S Half, Good Details (Scratches) $52 w/Buyer's Fee

G-4 bid is $120 while AG-3 is $70. It's a rare date so I should be able to get AG bid, maybe a little more.


(1975)-D Type 1 Bicentennial Dollar, "The Lost Year" - MS65 NGC, $25 w/Buyer's Fee.

CDNs are $30/40, not one I'd take to the LCS but possibly one I could turn a quick 20% on, or maybe a $35 sale. Still in the large dollar category, weirdly popular to be a clad dollar coin.

If I come across as bragging, I don't mean to, as I probably have to some people. I am rather showcasing what many people have missed, especially ones who bid unreasonable amounts on other coins that have CDN numbers significantly less than what the coins go for.

I do also like to hear what you guys have to say, so it's a win-win either way.

I may have to get more of those PF 68 RD's though.....

Will do! As long as there are more deals there, I'll showcase them every Sunday. I'm generally on there spending quite a bit on new additions, as lurking only in the 40's and 50's proof coins won't do me much good, part of why you're seeing many firsts, such as the Barber.

Likely so - or it may be an overlooked category. On GC, you could easily pay $50 or more for the same coin.

They averaged about $34.25 for the first 10 coins I pulled up, so overall I didn't do too bad. Still a decent profit.

 

This week there was 1 more coin that I got, this one being more of a keeper than a seller.

It's something I wouldn't really expect to sell, as I paid $13 for it, but where else are you gonna get one of these Seated dimes slabbed for only $13? A first in Seated coins, may be the last for a while depending on what I find.

 

This week, there were a lot of excruciatingly exhausting stingy bidders. I predict that some bidders do this simply for the pleasure of winning, but below are the few pieces in which they made fools out of themselves tonight, especially when they're paying $40+ for a $10 coin.


1956 Type 2, PF 69 NGC, CDNs of $220/285, selling on Ebay from $135 to $250, paid $120 w/Buyer's Fee.


Fr. 1267, 15 Cent Columbia, Legacy G-6, $19 w/Buyer's Fee. CDNs for VG8 are $50/70, so this is probably a $25-40 note.


Fr. 1271, 15 Cents, Legacy VG8, $19 w/Buyer's Fee. CDNs of $50/70. And yes, this is no joke.


Fr. 1271, 15 Cents, Legacy G-6. Likely another $25-40 note like the 1267.

Sometimes you sit back and wonder how things like this got missed. PF69 Franklin halves seem to be quite popular within one of GC's most bid-on categories, but currency? You generally can't find a Greysheet deal on currency when on GC. That's where a lot of 'warriors' hang out and pay ridiculous amounts for silver certificate with CPGs of under $10.

The common denominator in all 3 of the notes I won is that they're all straight-graded with no problems. I don't like straight-graded currency with "minor" problems, as that should give it a Details grade. Thankfully my standards were met once everything else turmoiled, and it paid off good.

I'm hoping next week is dealer-friendly, but ya never know.

 

Whether I'm an idiot or not remains to be determined, but i was thrilled to finally get my 1869-S F-102 Seated Dime in this auction. In my opinion the coin has no business being in a straight graded holder (can't post pics. yet: but is in archive at G.C.) but I have been after a 102 for so many years I had begun to think they didn't actually exist. James

 

You wouldn't be an idiot at all. If you've been chasing the F-102 for years, and now have one, you should congratulate yourself on conquering a years-long task. Looks like only 2 or 3 have sold there, meaning it's likely either very rare or most of the surviving examples are off the market. In all honesty, I think you did good.

 

Got more pickups tonight!

This time, except for 1 Lincoln cent it was all Jefferson nickels - a whopping thirty. Which I somehow got past the bidiots with.


First on the goodies are 1951 PF 66 nickels. I managed to get 7 NGC and 1 PCGS; CDNs are $40/55 and I likely can clear $30 each from my LCS. Most days I'm lucky just to get 2 or 3, let alone 75% of the total PR66 1951's.

I also got 7 1952 PR66's that would likely clear for the same amount, also with CDNs of $40/55.


1954, ICG PR65, CDNs of $14/19, $7 with Buyer's Fee. Yep, I cannot, to save my life, find out how to get a coin for $2 on GC. The closest I've come to it is $2.66, but for this 1954, although acetone may help it - it's authentic, it's slabbed, it's half bid, I ain't touchin' this hazy guy.


1964-D, MS66, $14 w/Buyer's Fee. Not as good-looking as the one I got on USA Coin Book a few days ago, but Greysheet is $25 so I'll take it.


1940, 1969-S, 1970-D, and 1970-S - all ICG MS63, all 4 for $16 total. The 1940, 1969-S, and 1970-S are coins I would sell for $5 a slab but take a look at the 1970-D.

Judging by the obverse, this coin may be PL. Greysheet is nonexistent for a 1970-D in PL, likely meaning it's either worth very little or is rare enough to not be well-documented. When I get this coin, I'll post it - somewhere on CT - and share if the reverse matches the obverse.

I'm sure @physics-fan3.14 would love a coin like this!

 

Fully prooflike 64D, 68D, 69D, 70D, and 70S have all been graded by NGC. 64D is by far the most "common" with a whopping 17 designated. There are only 4 70Ds designated. I don't own any of those, but I do have a 64D and a 69D (5 designated). This one is NGC MS-66PL, which is Pop 1/0:

 

That is one awesome 69-D! Correct me if I'm wrong but a 1/0 pop puts that as the finest PL 69-D.

The 70-D, while appearing PL from the obverse, is sketchy as to the reverse - one of GC's only faults, being that for most multi-coin auctions they don't take a combined picture of the reverse. But the fact that if I send it to PCGS or NGC, that 70-D could be only the 5th of its type certified PL is diabolical. That puts it close in rarity to a 70-D in full steps.

 

It is opinion. I do not like these neon toned cents at all. That is my opinion, and I am entitled to my opinion.

I would never buy any neon copper coins. I have watched too many copper coins change color over the years and lost a lot of money because of it.

 

The toning on these coins is created by a chemical reaction. Is the coin stable or not? No one really knowns. Copper is the most reactive of three classic coinage metals. Gold is quite inert and silver tones over time.

Here is an example of how things can go wrong. This 1963 cent was graded PR-70 Ultra Cameo. It was the finest graded, and brought something like $40,000 in an auction at some point. You can see from these pictures that the coin has spots and could no longer be called a Proof 70. Yet it came for auction and still got very high bids simply because it was the finest graded which gave the owner the most registry points.



When the piece came for auction, there was a storm of messages on the PCGS blog which pointed out the issues. Finally PCGS bought the coin off the market to stem the issue.

The point is these coins are very delicate. It seems to get worse when they are removed from their mint packaging. Collectors should realize that there are risks connected with these coins that are beyond what the market can do.

 

I know NGC's guarantee only covers copper coins for 10 years. Not sure about PCGS.

 

This week featured 2 good pickups.

1907 1C, PCGS UNC Details, cleaned, $20.09 w/Buyer's Fee. Nice coin to be cleaned.


1864-S 50C, PCGS G Detail, minor reverse damage. $31.06 w/Buyer's Fee.

G-4 bid is $75 and AG-3 is $50; for $31.06, it's not a bad coin, considering it's both a semi-key date and my first Seated half from GC.

Idk why but the Details coins that don't go for crazy money are often very overlooked. It's pretty good on the latter side, though.

 

What I found highly ironic... shortly after this discussion, I noticed there was an NGC MS-65PL 1970D Nickel on Great Collections... I won it last night for the surprisingly reasonable $245!
