Does anybody know when the Native American (Sacagawea) Dollar program ends? I thought it was 2016 when the Pres idential Dollars stopped, but now the US Mint is selling 2017 Native American Dollars?
There is no end date. https://catalog.usmint.gov/coin-programs/native-american-1-coins/ https://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/nativeamerican/Legislation.pdf
Good Conder caught it. From Public Law 110-82 ‘‘(5) QUANTITY.—The number of $1 coins minted and issued in a year with the Sacagawea-design on the obverse shall be not less than 20 percent of the total number of $1 coins minted and issued in such year.’’. 100% is not less than 20%. Sac-obverse is authorized ad infinitum.
‘‘(5) QUANTITY.—The number of $1 coins minted and issued in a year with the Sacagawea-design on the obverse shall be not less than 20 percent of the total number of $1 coins minted and issued in such year.’’ I think the part of the law quoted above is still being adhered to. I think it was meant to ensure a certain visibility of the NA coins to the public (i.e. not be drowned out by dead presidents!). ‘‘(C) ORDER OF ISSUANCE OF DESIGNS.—Each coin issued under this subsection commemorating Native Americans and their contributions— ‘‘(i) shall be issued, to the maximum extent practicable, in the chronological order in which the Native Americans lived or the events occurred, until the termination of the coin program described in subsection (n) [i.e. the presidential dollars]; and ‘‘(ii) thereafter shall be issued in any order deter- mined to be appropriate by the Secretary, after con- sultation with the Committee on Indian Affairs of the Senate, the Congressional Native American Caucus of the House of Representatives, and the National Con- gress of American Indians. Again, i think the two parts quoted above together allows for the continuance of NA dollars. I could be mistaken. Red bits are my highlights/comments.
Now, about the advisability of continuing to create these from a supply and demand perspective... meh.
Agreed. But they'll just mint them in "for collector" quantities just like the Kennedy halfs. Both should be suspended in my opinion.
And there are plenty of dollar (Presidential) coins already in goober warehouses waiting (hopefully) for the demise of the paper dollar.
The reason that the Morgans were sold off in the GSA sales is that the silver value had exceeded the face value and the government saw the opportunity to cash in. Unless brass or manganese becomes precious, the golden dollars will never have a reason for that kind of demand.
The last of the Morgans sold off had a few circulated mixed dates, but mostly BU examples of the CC coins that they knew they would get a premium for. It was actually a little less about the melt value exceeding the face value and a lot more about the rarity of the coins that they knew they could get more money for.
Got's a standing order for them things Bob. Can't help myself. With all I've got, heavy lifting is required.......
