A guy from work that knows I'm into numismatics brought this in today. He asked me if it was worth more than a nickel and I said well it's worth at least a dollar in silver, I think. So he asked me if I wanted it for a dollar. I definitely took him up on it.
It's a nice example of the error, good going. And we shan't complain it's cleaned, we take them as we find them.
I seem to recall reading a number of years ago that that the mint had trouble with this Copper/Silver/Manganese alloy. In the rush to get Nickel out of the coin (it was critical for the war effort) they didn't work out all of the bugs with the smelting. That's the reason why you see more laminations on war nickels than other nickels. Sorry I don't have a reference, but I'm pretty sure this is correct
Lol ya my friends, wife, kids (except one boy that loves it too), they all give me plenty of grief. My wife didn't come around until I scored a 1864 L cent last summer on ebay for $9 and then resold it for $163 a month later.
Ya, he found it in pocket change and the only reason he kept it was because of the crack. He had no idea it was silver. After I looked at it and then handed it back I cringed when he held it between his thumb and finger on the obverse and reverse. That's when I remembered, this thing has been through some ruff days, oh well. We take em as we find them.
I hate it when people ask. "can i see that?" referring to whatever coin I'm holding and they hold it like they are about to throw it at something.
Thanks. I'm on a roll right now. Going through a box last night and the third roll gave up the elusive 1950 D Jefferson nickel. I couldn't believe that one. I don't know if you're into roll hunting but that is one of the hardest nickels to pull. It's been a pretty good week!
I'm actually pretty new to crh only have opened penny and nickel boxes and no war nickels live very close to philly so a lot of p mintmarks but I'll find something. also I only really have td banks around me and they removed their free coin counters last year so the only thing I have is coin star....... 10.9% tax is gonna be rough.
Wow, I couldn't do it if I had to dump in coin star. Before I got an account at another bank, just for dumping, I found out that my main branch would let me bring them a box of loose coins and they had a counter in the back they would dump in when convenient for them and deposit it into my bank account after. Maybe ask at a couple branches to see if they would do that for you. That percentage must really eat into your profit margin....
