If you asked the dealers at a show what slabbed coin they would prefer to buy 9 out of 10 would say PCGS. However.. most of the collectors I know could careless , as again they buy the coin not the plastic. Those of us old timers will tell you - that if you can't trust your own eye, or if you haven't done your homework maybe you shouldn't make the purchase . Again hype is not your friend.... education and research is. Another point that hasn't been examined is the so called experts who work for a TPG. I can only imagine that in this business like most businesses people tend to move on. That said who has the best "Experts in the business ?" I would guess that would depend on what company pays well and treats their staff the best. Another factor is what is the work load? Does the company have a quota? On how many specimens a grader has to grade in a days work? Quantity and quality are at different ends of the spectrum . And then there's the human factor We all have seen that no matter what plastic a coin is in...
Exactly. The internet market which has been a large portion of collecting in recent years would effectively be dead. Since most local shops have gone out of business from the internet you'd have large areas of the country that really had nothing at their disposal. Not to mention the hits auction houses would take ect.
so please note for all those ngc registry users that have pcgs coins on there i suggest you print hard copys of your registries .. and up date manually cause your slots will drop dramatically
Revolution? Not quite yet. Parry, thrust for the moment? You bet. Don't crack out your coins yet dear fellows.
Not a chance. If it looked like they were dying, I'd join the effort to start a new one so authentication and sight-unseen trading could exist. Numismatics would die with the TPG's, in today's environment. I_will, however, buy the first round of drinks if NGC manages to drive PCGS out of business. Third-party grading cannot be a monopoly - too dangerous - but it would please me to no end if ANACS and ICG took up the slack.
Ask yourself a question since the first company who graded and slabbed a coin how many are left? How many have gone out of business ? How many with stood the test of time? No worries though.... as we now have stickers to re enforce our needs to be made at ease ,because we decided to buy something out of our wheelhouse . Or again drink the kool-aid and the hype.
Well Im sure if TPG,s were to go (which they are not), there would be alot of people happy that say Thats why you buy the coin not the holder. (wish I has a dime foe everytime I hear or read it). Yes collectors need to do their research & education, but in todays world their are "plenty of experts" who have bought fake coins. So coins in slabs are a blessing to some.
I buy the hype as long as I agree with the printing on the plastic........other than that, they can go fish........
We can't even get people to accept the appropriate definition of a "cud," much less teach them authentication.
Also wouldn't happen. If one of the top 2 goes out of business you will really just have a monopoly. About the only company that has the reputation to step in and immediately fill a top 2 shoes would be if CAC said okay were going to grade raw coins now.
Wow. Comes off like the husband that is the one cheating but is accusing the wife of being the cheater as a distraction. It'll be interesting to see how PCGS responds but my guess is they won't care and won't even respond at all. NGC doesn't hold a candle to them overall. This all wreaks of sour grapes and a last ditch effort to grab market share. If I worked at NGC right now I would be typing up my resume just in case. If the guys that run anacs are smart they should start formulating a hostile takeover to become #2
Well, consider that the destruction of PCGS would put some really capable, experienced people into the job market, and an existing TPG would be their prime landing spot....somebody email John Albanese.
But, I've heard you say that you trust NGC leaps and bounds above PCGS for variety attribution and VAMing.
Say what!? I don't trust either in that regard. Please find where I've said that anywhere, ever. However, I would trust PCGS over NGC when it comes to VAMming and varieties if I had to chose between the two.
Except they would be tainted for their company going under unless the only reason was poor financial management which they don't seem to be in any danger of. We've already seen how ANACS and ICG have fallen from the swap personal musical chairs.
