In Dec. 1988 the Mint ran out of reverse working dies and were compelled to use the new RDV for 1989. This new RDV was essentially the same but featured a bolder FG for the designers initials, and the G has flared serifs. The new RDV is called The Reverse of 1989 and is considered a transitional year. The OP was alluding to this transitional change. However, he needs to supply a clear close-up of the FG.
