Not the nicest coin, looks better in the pics but was pretty amazed at the detail on the tiny fallen horseman's face. Please post some relevant coins or other tiny barbarian faces!!
How do you read your mintmark? The closest I have is what I believe to be a Siscia Gallus with II in reverse field somewhat obscured by being overstruck on a Constantius II Aquileia two captives type. It is my only Gallus with the II reverse letters.
interesting coin ! i assume mine to be siscia, can kind of make it out and the majority of this lot has been from siscia.
i don't have a coin of constantius gallus, i could have swore i did! well, add another to the list. here's a fallen horseman of his brother i picked up last fall...
How about a barbarian king of Rome? Athalaric, Ostrogothic Kingdom AE decanummium Obv: INVICT-A ROMA, Roma helmeted, facing right Rev: D N ATHAL-ARICVS, Athalaric, in military outfit, standing, holding spear and shield, S-C across fields, X in left field Mint: Rome Date: 526-534 AD Ref: BMC 69, COI 85b
Almost forgot my only other coin depicting a barbarian monarch. Long hair was a staple of male royalty in the barbarian kingdoms, unlike the Romans before them. Sisebut, Visigothic Kingdom AV tremissis Obv: + SISEBVTVS REX, bust facing Rev: + TOLETO PIVS, bust facing Mint: Toledo Date: 612-621 AD Ref: Miles 183a
i do not have before pics for this particular coin, for this one i used a simple soak in distilled water and a scrub with a toothbrush and a brass brush in the initial stages. Followed by some gentle picking with a craft knife+ dental pic. below is one i cleaned up last week. Before: Progress: DONE:
Somehow I haven't scored myself a Constantius Gallus example!! (I know, right?) Oh, bsr => congrats on your new OP-addition
