As I said....."Here it goes": I have attempted my first crack-out seeking a better grad.....with 5 Morgan Dollars. Here's the story: I bought five "Beautiful" Morgans via a Stacks' & Bowers Auction. All the coins were graded AU55 by PCGS. I'm thinking, "These coins really should be AU58+. So I bought them - Cracked them out - Sent them in "Raw" to NGC - Received them back today - ALL 5 "graded".... "UNC Details Improperly Cleaned". So..... Now what? What would you do? I'm a pretty good grader of Morgans and these all show as 58+. Any and all suggestions/advise/admonishments would be appreciated. Thank you - in advance - for your time on my behalf.

Ouch. Were they rare dates? Price jump from 55 to 58+ does not seem like it would be worth it.

Not saying this to be harsh but I think you've answered your own question..."Flop". It happens from time to time. But I am surprised that PCGS allowed the cleaning to get through w/o a designation. As said above, if these were rare dates I could understand but common dates I would not have done this with, not for a slight bump up like you were looking for. Lesson learned hopefully.

Stacks Bowers is the updated Teletrade. Read into it what you like........

I'm post Teletrade. What do you mean? Crypt me a response and I'll figure it out. Thanks

Teletrade was a sight-unseen trading network for certified coins. You didn't even get pictures of the coins in advance.

What do you want to do with these coins? Keep them in your collection? Resell them?

Not knowing the dates the question becomes what kind of price jumps are we talking from AU to Uncirc. There is a senario that one may be worth more as an uncirc. Other than that crack them and send them to PCGS.

Nothing says NGC is actually correct and we don't have any pictures to make any guesses. NGC does have a tendency to details coins that were dipped even if done properly and I suspect that on most of those if not all that is what happened.

Lots of times, 'sloppy seconds' wound up on their site......I know, because I bought more than a few.

I'd chalk it up to "lesson learned". Maybe you should have submitted them to CAC, instead.

Actually Paul, I always saw what I was bidding on. I just lacked the acumen to know what I was looking at. Still, I've kept most of what I did buy. Just upgraded a bit on some without the selling of the original purchases.

Thanks guys for all the input. I'm thinking I'm going to crack out again and send them onto PCGS. Question... how detrimental is "UNC Details Improperly Cleaned "?

Is the AU to MS spread is minimal to non existent its a big kick in the pants. If there's a huge jump to MS from AU it could be a push or even beneficial to some extent.

Depends entirely on the coins. I've bought details coins that I thought PCGS screwed up on. Are the coins heavily hairlined?

Thanks. I think I'll think on this experience for a while and maybe do something down the line. Right now it's simply a $2,000 "lesson ".......My Thanks
