My wife has never bought me a coin!
So are you going to free it from its tomb?

Definitely not. This has a pedigree to it, the Golden Age Hoard, but I can't find info on that Hoard anywhere. If anyone can help....

I'm seeing this same coin, Tpg, and grade sell for half the amount than the same coin from this mysterious hoard, lol. Can anyone tell me why this is?

Aw come on I have some hoard coins that are raw!
    Its yours. A great first.
Hell, I've only been collecting ancients I guess 7 months now.
    Be careful it's very addictive.

Hahaha. There is one thing you have to learn about NGC, which frankly as a US or World collector you should have learned. They add whatever they have to to their labels for a little extra money. Which is why you have things like First Strike on bullion coins, or special Wyatt Earp, Christmas, and Home Shopping Network labels that have nothing to do with the coins themselves, etc.

None of the "hoards" NGC has for ancients is a real hoard...or at least there is no academic/historical evidence for such hoards existing. They've made up the Colloseum Hoard, the Byzantine Hoard, the Seven Hills Hoard, and looks like now they have a new one, the Golden Age Hoard.

If I had a big company with enough cash to grade and have a new hoard created, and 500 coins at my disposal, I'd pay them to create a hoard for me too...I was thinking something like the Imperial Hoard, or the Augustian Hoard, etc. It's called marketing. Invent a hoard name and some sucker will pay extra for the label.

It's a nice coin, but I bet your wife paid 50% too much for it because of the plastic and fake hoard name. Well, at least it got you into the club. Welcome! Stick around and you'll be blown away by how fun ancients are.

@Nathan401 I hope you realize I'm not trying to rain on your gift. It's a very pretty coin. I'm simply letting you know of that deceptive practice by NGC, which all of us here have criticized to no end.

More surprised its "CH XF" when there is a pit in the neck. That would be called damaged in the U.S. coin world...

Very common coin, hate to know what your wife paid, but welcome. Hopefully your future ancients won't be in the plastic.

Yes @Nathan401 , I'm afraid @green18 is right. Pretty soon we'll have you buying beautiful raw ancient coins at low prices you never believed possible, and buying things like callipers, coin scales, paper envelopes, etc.

    Run away while you can!

You didn't rain on me. I understand the TPGs pull all kinds of crap to make money. That being said, according to your prices we did all right, by paying just over 100$. Far south of the 240 you suggested, and only barely north of 90$ raw.

Yeah, at that price I would probably buy it too, considering I still need a coin of hers.

However, unlike you, the plastic would meet my friend Mr. Hammer as soon as the coin got to my mailbox.

I think my Wife was worried about authenticity, and so went with the slab. There was an amazing sale going on and she jumped at it. But she (and I as well) prefer all our coins raw.

You know Nathan, Valentine's day is just around the corner. Maybe you should mention to your wife how much you'd love to have your very own first tetadrachm. Nothing says love like a thick piece of Ancient Greek silver.
