VAMming is not as popular as the amount of press we give it would indicate. Collecting higher-end VAMs is only possible for those with deep pockets, and even lower-grade examples add up given the individual cost of Morgans. Further, many VAM fans (myself included) much prefer to cherrypick their own, because so many attributed coins are offered at unrealistic prices by people who automatically assume anything with an attribution is worth a premium. It is very, very difficult to sell attributed VAMs unless they're in-demand examples offered in the right venue.
I like to cherrypick my own or just buy a nice Morgan and attribute it when I get it. I think most VAMers prefer to do this which is why they arent so easy to sell. An already attributed one kind of takes the fun out of buying them IMO. All my Morgans are attributed with the exception of a couple of 21's. My Peace dollars however, well I havent found the motivation to finish attributing them yet.
As the age of collectors advances their eyesight becomes poorer. That and 98% of VAMs need 10x-20x to be seen. I have a nice AU 1878 VAM 44 triple blossom that I bought 30+ years ago. Then I could clearly see the target area, now only with a loupe. VAMs like most niche areas of our hobby are as rare as the collectors that collect them.
To Cascade, I have a 1878 VAM 44 Triple Blossom. Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars 3rd ed. Page 152. Bought from Bill Fivaz and confirmed by Randy Campbell in 1985.
With XFinity only working part time in my area and the fact that I am having trouble posting pics to this site there are no pics at this time. If you can give any advice on posting or if Cascade could send their E-mail address i will try to show pics that way. Tibor
44A, as the clashing is specifically mentioned as the identifying factor. Sure would like to see if the radial die crack is there, though.
As already mentioned, my preference is to cherry pick VAMs as well. I prefer to attribute my own coins than have someone else do it and pay a premium for it. Nice 44A!
The radial crack is just above the 7th left star, between it and the E. That spot is not visible in these images. The clashing is in the "usual places," which I've circled below:
My coin has the clash marks and a VERY small die crack between the 7th star and the "E". It almost touches the star. What are the values for the VAM 44 and VAM 44A? I will try to post an image this weekend. Don't a large number of Morgan/Peace dollars have Clash Marks (30%-40%)?
A *lot* of clashing can be found in the Morgan series. I think values for 44/44A are similar. Either way, the value of your coin extends well into 4 figures and possibly more. Too few reach public auction for a solid record, but I'd expect to write a check approaching $5,000 for an AU55.
