Hey i need some advice on if i should get this graded, im no expert. anything will help. Its a 1983 P nickel with a cud at the top. you can see stairs on the Monticello with the naked eye. I only have a picture of the front atm but ill update the post later with the back
Nice coin, no not worth getting slabbed. Well I shouldn't say that because I found one and had it slabbed.
1983-02. I have a 1983P-17 (I think), as well, but one of the things I don't like about that site is there are three or four (or more) similar which could conceivably be differing die states of that cud, yet seemingly no effort whatsoever has been made for research in that direction.
I hear that. I'm also of the opinion that even though probably not worth much, that there are varying stages of the doubled ear Lincoln cent. Certainly, John Wexler has gone the whole nine yards on the die stage differences on the 2009 P Lincolns. But I also suspect that these guys, like Bob Neff for cuds probably get overwhelmed with so many submissions that they get behind on their web sites. Ken Potter also as he does articles, runs his own coin business. Just like our friend over on ancients who has gotten ahead of himself and behind at the same time.
I can't say I have a ton of respect for that site, nor have I from their beginning. They take in pictures of cuds, assign a number and walk away with no attempt to relate them to any other known research on the issue. And cuds can progress, become larger as the periphery of the already-broken die chips away. They make no attempt at codifying that, either. As far as I'm concerned, it's numismatic backslapping sans any genuine "scholarship."
Ive seen 1983 p nickels without the cud go for up to $500 because they got graded "Full Steps". mine has a cud and on the reverse you can see each individual step on the monticello with the naked eye. is there any way that could increase value?
Probably, just as long as there are no breaks or hits interfering with the individual steps and no other adverse hits anywhere else.
