This is the first ancient I ever purchased. I picked it up over 30 years ago. I had it slabbed it a couple of years ago to protect it.
@Denis Richard Wonderful coin and splendid image! Love that lighthouse! @Tall Paul Lovely Alexander II Zabinas tetradrachm! I'll happily trade you my somewhat pitted Alexander II drachm for it. ;-) Here is my favorite Alexander III... a lifetime issue from Babylon... Price #3599... obvious wear and some porosity (especially on the reverse)... but we buy what we can afford, eh?
@Croatian Coin Collector That is a stunning Alexander III stater! I'd give my left hand for it. (Full disclosure: I'm right handed.) I love the type's simple style and beauty. Related to the type... I do have a bronze coin of the Nabatean ruler Aretas II which is of a type (Meshorer 1) that is widely believed to have been intentionally patterned after the Alexandrine stater type you have. Here it is:
Thank you, it is a lifetime issue that was minted in Sardis sometime between 334 and 332 BCE and it is one of my favourite coins.
That is a nice Stater. While I can't tell completely from the photo, it looks a lot nicer than the stated grade.
Yes, and it looks better in person than in the pictures, so I don't get the stated grade either, but luckily I don't care about grades.
This is my second oldest coin, and I am so happy to have it in my collection. It is a tetradrachm minted in Babylon from 323 to 317 BC, Price 3692. It is hard to imagine the world it came from, but the scene from the film Alexander that shows him arriving in Babylon as its conqueror can give us some idea.
