Got an email from the mint today about this coin: Celebrating 225 Years Unveiling the 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin Tune in tomorrow to see live coverage of the historical unveiling ceremony for the 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin. The ceremony will be held at the Department of Treasury. This event will not only officially unveil the ground breaking design of this coin, it will also kick-off the yearlong celebration of the United States Mint’s 225th Anniversary. Stay tuned, the Live Stream link will be sent tomorrow I believe this is what they are doing: Thoughts? I think it will be a low mintage coin. There were so many awesome designs to choose from, including my favorite: I really do not like the design they picked, but I have to admit, in the end, it MIGHT be profitable, because I don't think it will sell well at all.
America is known as the melting pot. This coin is going to find out what the melting pot is when it doesn't sell.
I generally agree with this, but at least the mint is consistent in that they almost never pick the best proposed design.
Well I guess we'll get to see the reverse design unveiled tomorrow at any rate. I also wish they would have chosen a less socially justice driven portrait for representation of Liberty. The gold coin will probably have a very low mintage imo also. But I think the silver four medal set will have a high mintage as everyone is going to buy them thinking the mintage will be super low and thus make it much higher than they'll ever be demand for. I suppose that could also happen with the gold coin but the high price might prevent that.
That's the 'proposed' reverse by the CCAC but the mint hasn't actually revealed whether or not they went with that design yet and will be revealing it tomorrow.
Yeah, no idea but apparently the mint doesn't have to go with the design chosen by the CCAC if they don't want to as they are just 'recommendations'. The unveiling ceremony is at 1pm tomorrow and was invitation only for mint employees I think but they are going to live stream it to reveal the full design. Personally I hope they go with one of the other designs that were in the reverse selection portfolio.
Seems strange if they did only pick one side so far. From all the designs offered I do hope they go against the recommendations. I don't mind the eagle but the more I see it the more it does come a bit meh.
They chose that over that stunning design?! #DTmS! Seriously, that sketched design is epically gorgeous and evokes deep patriotism. The design they chose looks cartoonish especially in comparison. I really hope they use that other design down the road. And as to this possibly being a sleeper. Two things are needed. Low mintage AND demand
I think the irony is in one of the committee members statements regarding coinage designs and then one of the mint's most successful products last year being the gold centennials, using two of Weinman's designs who apparently the CCAC isn't a fan of yet collectors still are. http://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2016/03/ccac-secures-two-long-sought-goals.all.html
Also agreed. Need some new blood on there or better yet just do internet votes with the proposed designs and most votes is chosen
I believe you have said my concern about the coins I words better than I could have used. The mint used too much social justice as you call it in their selection.
Have they announced a mintage yet? If they say something like 100k its probably dead in the water already
I'd be surprised if it sold 20k. This highlights the fact that the CCAC really has no clue. What a shame for us. Thank God I collect 99% classics
