I have been going out fairly regularly when the days are nice. I get tired of sitting at my desk studying, especially when the days are nice. For that reason, my wife, three children, and I go out to a large park where there are a few nice playgrounds for the children to play at. I have started going out and metal detecting in the large, grassy areas (away from the playground - too close is illegal it seems in Chicago). The park I am at was established in 1869, but I have yet to find any silver (I have never actually found a silver coin ever at this point). Yesterday and today I had two firsts. Yesterday I found a Sacagawea and this evening I found a 1923 Buffalo nickel. I also included a picture of my most interesting junk finds: the special Olympic medal (not silver) and the watch. I find so many bottle caps and pull tabs, it's not even funny. I once heard that you'll find a ring for every 100 pull tabs found. I am way overdue, if that is true! The oldest coin I have dug up there so far is a 1918 wheat cent on my first day there (not pictured). In case you wonder, I am using a Nokta Legend (a vast upgrade from my Ace 250).
You didn't find much this day but it's always a good day when you get a chance to spend time with family. Win Win situation. Don't give up. I once found a beautiful little ring under the sand near a swing. I was like a novice detectorist, yelling, "A ring, a ring!" My wife was telling me to be quiet. So I did. It's 12K gold with a nice stone. It was my first real ring in 10 years! I like the older sites in the wooded wagon trailed locations here in Connecticut and MA. Now where did I put that ring? I try to dig that little gem up in the morning. "Keep on beeping!"
I firmly believe that future archaeologists will use the "pull tab layer" to precisely date other artifacts.
That's a huge upgrade from the Ace 250! Do you have the NOKTA set as single tone or multi tone? Multi tone is way better! I use Field mode instead of Park mode all the time. Both those settings of multi tone and field help me find a lot of silver! These are my silver coins and silver ring total. I have 2 silver rings but can't find the other at the moment..
I use multi-tone. I currently have it set for 4 tones. I really like how easy it is to change various settings.
Anthropologists at the University of Arizona engaged in a multiyear project of waste disposal habits by examining people's garbage. Pull tabs change in style so frequently that the scientists actually used them to date stratigraphic layers in garbage dumps.
Thanks @paddyman98 I purchased a Legend today. Can't wait for it to arrive so I can try it out, weather permitting.
