Peace my friends! Although our interests are thousands of years distant, we are all brothers and sisters in our passion for coin collecting. We can all learn from one another. Not a sermon, just a thought.
A very generous offer, 9ball, and I would put my name on the list if I didn't already have the catalog. I am trying to obtain a catalog from each auction in which one or more of the coins in my collection appeared. I own lot 2009 from that auction: Tarentum, Calabria, AR stater, c 480-470 BC, 18 mm, 8.04 g. OBV: TARAΣ (retrograde); Nude Phalanthos riding dolphin right, raising left arm, right arm resting on dolphin; scallop shell below; cable border around / REV: Wheel with four spokes and central hub within incuse circle. Vlasto 74; SNG Copenhagen 767; SNG ANS 827; Historia Numorum Italy 833; Fischer-Bossert 81; BMC 35; Dewing 128. Purchased 28 May 2014, Hess-Divo AG, Auction 326, Lot 7 (Edward J. Waddell, agent. Ex: Numismatica Genevensis SA, Auction 7, 27 November 2012, Lot 122. Ex: Lawrence R. Stack Collection, Stack's, New York, 14 January 2008, Lot 2009. Ex: Edward J. Waddell, Ltd. Fixed Price List, 7 December 2005, lot 6.
For me they are Ancient and World coins. US coins way too expensive for what I might want. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk Though Roman adoptive emperors seem to be my drive.
I have a couple of strays the owners won't take care of if you want. I call them free loader #1 . Smojo is my cat, he's actually pretty cool.
Ancient coins is my main focus. But I thought with all the arguing going on I'd add this little tid bit. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/off-topic-what-other-stuff-do-you-collect.283974/ Maybe it'll give those others a place to go look!!
My daughter wants another one Everytime she sees a stray I'm adopting another From the hobby center and think tank of MTS.LLC
Lol, I'm at heart a dog person. But have smojo 1st cat. There's a few that roam my front & back yards I'd love to find a home. Unfortunately it seems Noone wants them. They're great cats, have no mice or squirrel problems.
You can see the double strike in the second coin you posted. The cross is not symmetrical because part of the line was from a previous strike (I think). Double strikes come in many forms. They can be a coin struck on a different issuing authorities coin like this - A Roman Republican sextans over a manheaded bull (not Roman) or one can strike on an older coin RR quadrans over uncia (a 3 dot over a 1 dot coin) @dougsmit had an excellent post on the subject. He shows some coins similar to yours. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/byzantine-games-for-the-truly-bored.284635/#post-2534012
Steve, please don't take me seriously on this. I meant it humorously about ships+parties. My engineers' mind did not see the obvious synergy between the two. I really hope I get invited to a party on a boat sometime!
