Here where I live we already have had 150 centimeters of the white stuff=5 feet! When I was a seven, the weatherman would come on CBC TV and basically say we are in for six inches of snow, and no weather watch/warning...it was just Winter! Now, on this weather channel/ one....they cannot predict anything right/long range 15 day forecast is a joke Then, even for 15 centimeters they announce a "snowfall warning",It was -24 last night, you guessed it...an extreme cold warning! They must think we are all a bunch of wimps! Now, I named my Boxer "Loki" and the Rottie, "Thor" All the "Mastiff" type Dogs deserve a "God's" name! House scene Jan. Loki Thor
Yeah, well, when I was a young-un we used to walk uphill 15 miles to school everyday, and 15 miles uphill home every afternoon in waist deep snow. I don't know what's wrong with the younger generations. Wimps to say the least.
We had about 8inches in NC, which is enough to shut this place down. I was hoping to spend today rephotographing my coin collection thanks to a lovely Christmas gift from my wife - unfortunately I can't find a suitable background for what I hope to do... (otherwise, I think I am getting much improved images).
I'm looking at water, instead of snow! I live in a small city in Northern California about 200 yards from the levee. Flood level is 87 feet and forecast is 86 feet by 8 AM tomorrow and more heavy rain! I'm starting to raise things up and pack...coins first!
Texas Gulf Coast snowman. If you google the pic you will find other states making the same claim. @dougsmit - I agree with you, I am hoping for warmer, drier weather for NYINC. We have tickets from Houston to NY and are headed that way come snow or high water.
Fortunately, I'm only a 3 hour train ride away from NYINC, but I am aware of at least one CoinTalk member who had to change flight plans because of Helena. Ironic that the storm that delayed 1,000 flights was named after the face that launched 1,000 ships!
Jeff B, I live in California, we name earthquakes. Unlike a storm, they are not named in advance or during the event, but after the fact. 1906 San Francisco, 1971 San Fernando Valley and 1989 Loma Prieta to name a few big ones.
I live right outside of Boulder, CO and the snow started Wednesday but roads weren't too bad and I had no trouble getting home from work in my car(2wd, low clearance, regular tires). Thursday the snow started picking up and it got COLD so I decided to work from home, though I probably would have made the choice rain or shine because I had two coins arriving that required signature. This was taken from my back porch Thursday morning and we got a few more inches after this. Luckily we have pretty good plow teams here and by Friday morning I was able to drive to work just fine. I had no idea the storm had a name though, I stopped paying too close attention to the TV weather here a while back when we were forecast to get an inch of snow and got 18 inches and I mostly look at the summary on Google these days.
Cold and dreary in Germania today.....but when the weather breaks, just beautiful. Marcus Aurelius would have liked it.
Phhh. If you lived in these parts of Germania, i.e. near Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, the biggest snowmen you would see are this size ... That was about a week ago. Currently, nothing. Which was in fact a problem on Saturday when we had "flash ice" due to rain hitting the partly ice cold ground. Ah well, over. As for weather conditions that have names, here you can buy a high. Note that it's women's first names this year; men get the lows. Next year it will be the other way around again ... Christian
Well, lots of kids are out of school in the Southeast and Atlantic today -- and judging from the garbage posts (thanks for the quick clean-up, mods!), some of them are bored enough to turn their attention to CoinTalk.
Last week we used our bare hands to make snow men out of beach sand. This week, we are wearing gloves in the great white north. I'll keep this coin related...... We went to a cove where ships have been anchoring for a few hundred years. We tried our hand at metal detecting. Check-out this old coin I found: Probably a "stinkin-Lincoln"
Careful soaking in lemon juice and brushing. Once it is clear that it is a gold dubloon you can use ammonia.
That type of weather would be a problem for me. I love to sit in my backyard ever night and read a book for half an hour to an hour while smoking a cigar or one of my tobacco pipes. If I lived where @red_spork lives I'd end up like a popsicle if I did that. Glad I don't. I love your pictures of snow, but not actually being in snow. I once had to go to North Dakota in the middle of winter. -2F was more than enough to make me never want to see a northern winter in person again.
Winter can be a bit rough but the beautiful nature here is totally worth it and the low humidity summers are a nice bonus as well. The mountains are especially beautiful in late fall and winter. This was taken from a cabin we rented near Telluride a few months ago right as the first snows of the season had fallen:
Yeah, that's the one thing I wish Florida had...real mountains. Having lived in flat areas my whole life, I remember the first time I ever saw a mountain. It was only 4,000 feet tall, but it felt like I was staring at a 40,000 foot behemoth because I had never seen anything that tall in my life.
