how many people that put a value on an error coin when someone asks "how much is it worth" actually have experience selling those errors? are you just giving prices that you FEEL it is worth? or what YOU would be willing to pay? to all those who ask "what is it worth" I say this to you... once someone has helped you identify your error you should do 2 things. #1 thank them for their help. #2 go on ebay and go under SOLD listings and see what other people have been paying for that same error on a similar coin. keep in mind low mintage numbers and/or grade can increase the value. a good example is the Kansas state quarter with the minor grease filled die that reads "in god we rust" someone might call that missing a single letter a spender when they actually sell for $20-$30 on ebay.

Why do you think people buying on Ebay have any idea what it's worth? They overpay horribly for crap coins, and the same for error coins.

people pay ridiculous amounts for garbage. I agree. one man's trash is another man's treasure...right? it's only worth what someone is willing to pay. while one person says spend something, there might be 5 people on ebay that want that crap coin and will go to all ends to own it. just because they want it and can't live with the fact that someone bested them. I say well done to seller for listing crap and making a profit.

If they sell consistently for a certain price on eBay, that kinda re-defines what they're worth, doesn't it? At least in one sense?

Cigarettes aren't worth several bucks a pack (or several cents a pack) to me, but I have to admit that they have a market value...

If a coin consistently sells for $500 on Ebay and you can buy it from a dealer for $350 whenever you want, the coin is not worth $500.

But you do have to wonder why the dealer is selling them to you for $350 instead of getting $450 after fees for them on eBay.

Maybe because he can't face himself in the mirror after overcharging so greatly for a coin. Not all of us feel "get the most money possible out of this" is a worthy goal.

Some guy was selling New York City garbage on ebay, a few years ago, and people were buying it. So what's not to buy garbage coins on ebay?

If a coin consistently sells for $500 on eBay, you cannot buy it from a dealer for $350 whenever you want . . .

in all actuality who is the fool? the person spending the money on garbage? or the person that throws the garbage away and goes home with empty pockets??

if you can re-sell it for $500 it sure is. after ebay fees it's a $100 profit. also, the dealer might have several of that variety therefore making each less valuable to them, or they just want to get rid of them faster.

Or its just a local dealer with very limited to no online presence who the vast majority of buyers have no practical access too.

Every error coin I have is worth a million bucks, and I'll take offers.

If they aren't worth that to you, then they aren't.

"You" (individual) may have access to that dealer, then, but "you" (people in general) don't.

No. But some do -- and if they can buy the coin for $350 and resell it on eBay for $500, they will, and there won't be any left for you at $350.

Really, I think we're talking about different things, though. "Rare error coins" with a retained cud of chewing gum will never sell at coin shows, or local stores, or major auctions; they'll sometimes sell on eBay, because some people are goofy, and community shame doesn't seem to be a factor for eBay sellers.

Actual collectible coins, though? In my (narrow and limited) experience, some sell high on eBay, some sell low there. I've gotten some bargains (based on what dealers at shows paid me for them), but I spend many, many evenings browsing hundreds or thousands of auctions on eBay and buying nothing -- because nothing I view is priced low for what it is, or if it is, I don't get to it in time, or don't recognize it.

And say... aren't you the guy who cherry-picks Morgans on eBay? ;)
