Wanted a pretty nice seated half. This one was at an excellent price, and had very sharp detail. Obviously, a few hits on the obverse, but probably dipped, and not harshly cleaned. I would say it was graded appropriately--were it not for that hit on the left side of the obverse, it would have probably been a high AU:
They were definitely brutal on that one unless there was something we can't see in the picture. I like it from the pictures
Not sure I'm sensing things correctly but I'm getting the feeling that NGC and PCGS are tightening up on their grading.
55 was my first impression, 58 if there's good luster but definitely not a 50. I would have cracked and resubmitted or tried for a gold CAC if I was the submitter and it came back as that That's an older slab but they have been tighter overall in the last year or so then a couple years before.
I think, based on the feedback, I may crack it out and send it to NGC. I would bet on a 58 from NGC, or just leave it in the holder and send it for a bean. The luster is really nice in hand--were it not for the nicks on the obverse, it could have graded MS for sure--it isn't a classic wear situation, but rather, it graded AU for the nicks, as seated coinage doesn't have the same storage situation as do Morgans, where they sat in mint bags forever, and got dinged by other coins.
I think PCGS would regrade that higher as well, not sure what happened on that day first time they saw it. Maybe a Monday morning pre coffee grade lol. If it were me I would probably try for the gold bean first, that would probably make it the most desirable anyway if you ever decided to sell it.
That is my strategy-- go for the bean first. I think it is just about guaranteed a green one, and likely for a gold one. I have no desire to sell it, so I don't care as much about the grade. Knew that it looked much better than AU 50 to me. The AU grade is appropriate, but 50??? lol
The only thing that may hurt it with the bean is the little black spot they don't seem to like those, but in this case it's so grossly undergraded I don't think it will matter. Lol right 50s usually aren't the best looking and certainly have more rub/less luster than that one appears to have.
Yeah, that's an appropriate use of "lol." 55 all day, I doubt 58 simply because of the number of little marks. I like its' chances at a Gold bean.
Very nice coin! Like most of the other folks here, I agree with AU55. That's a sweet looking half ... wouldn't mind having one like that myself! I focus on capped dimes & half-dimes, but would take this one in a heartbeat for an AU50 price. Enjoy!!! Alan
It actually went for an XF 40 price, so I am happy. Think it is a 55, with likelihood of a gold bean at that grade, or an AU 58, as it looks really nice in hand--the photographs don't capture the luster.
Just plain luck. The dealer had dropped his prices on a number of items. I asked him for additional pictures, and liked what I saw. When the coin came, it was even nicer than the pictures. I guess it was luck getting a coin like that isn't that far from MS, and has eye appeal.
Showed the photographs to a friend who works for NGC, and his comment was: "Send it in; I have graded worse looking coins as MS 61." He thinks from the pictures (that make it look worse than in hand) that it is an AU58- MS61. Agreed that the coin never was in circulation ( a technical slider, not a wear coin) but probably owned by a collector, and got those little dings in poor storage.
