The Oregon Trail silver is the one I want but can never find, I finally got the '64 Franklin awhile back. I have no idea how many overstrikes of his I own, but a lot. The 1816 half is one of my personal favourites and aside from the Oregon Trail half is one of the best he has done.
Yeah. Those Oregon's don't come up often. Do you happen to own one of the 9 double struck 1816 half's?
I don't own any of his fantasy overstrike coins and at this time I don't plan on it. As interesting as I find them and I think the quality is great...I simply don't have the room in my budget to own one. I would rather spend my limited funds elsewhere. Due to my limited funds I'd personally rather own an original coin verses one of the restrikes...but that doesn't reduce how impressed I am with them. Now, he has some designs that aren't the fantasy overstrikes...designs of his own that I might one day pick up.
I'm still kind of kicking myself for not picking up the complete type set of overstrikes that was on eBay a few months ago. I just couldn't spare the $3500 or so at the time, otherwise I would have done it.
In "Keeping Up with the Joneses", I own quite a few but not all and especially not all the variants within a specific offering. (Circulated, bag handled, uncirculated, proof like, etc.) I've got the 1964-D Peace Dollar, most of the IKE's, some of the Kennedy's and Washington's and a single nickle. Kinda like the folks that whine about how many products that the US Mint produces, I started finding it "difficult" to "Keep Up with the Joneses" from a cost standpoint. Especially when the resale market teetered.
I don't know what resale market you're talking about, but they seem to be selling very well. Take a look at the 65-D right now. We're talking over $400 for the high grade! That's what the 64-D Peace used to go for, but you can't even get the 64-D right now.
The market sure didn't teeter on the Oregon Trail half either. And it seems to do well on the '64 Frankie.
The resale market I'm talking about extends well beyond a single coin since Daniel has produced 99 "different" over strike products since 2009. Individual coins aside, the aftermarket for DCarr pieces is just not that strong. By that I am referring to the IKE's, the Kennedy's, the Washington's, the Buffalo Nickel. We're not talking consistent premiums for lessor coins. And trying to keep up with the sheer NUMBER of offerings can be a very expensive operations.
I agree to some degree, but it also depends on the seller. There are some Carr items that always sell at high prices but yes there are also some that do not sell. On eBay, there are many way overpriced BIN Carr items that seldom or never sell. However, if a seller lists an overstrike or another Carr item at a true .99 start auction, they usually command a premium. It's when sellers start the bidding very high or sell as a BIN, that these items do not sell. IMO, they should at least allow the buyer to make an offer on the BIN. TC
Anything Dan's dies touch command a premium over issue price and sometimes even when you can still buy the at issue price however strange that may seem. I have yet to find something in the aftermarket that goes below issue aside the errant listing. He's got the Midas touch. That said, some do much, much better than others but they all typically command premiums over issue price to some degree.
Most sellers don't want to risk true .99 cent auctions on ebay anymore. Too many end up being a fire-sale.
I agree, but have not seen that happen very often wth Carr items. IMO, also listing a Carr item before a sell out at the Moonlight Mint is also a mistake.
His do seem to be more immune though I'm sure it's hard to break that mindset. I agree too before the sell out or production stops sales are usually slower or weak especially for the raw items, at least the slabbed ones save the buyer the trouble of doing that if that's what they want.
I bought a couple of pieces last year. They look ok. But a little over price I would think. Of course Not the real thing but the detail could be better on them coins to be MS condition. I think I won't be buying anymore. Just nice to get a couple piece for shows.
