This was a coin I was debating but did not win. More on my reasoning after the reveal.
For now please guess the grade and the final price (including the auction fee).

AU-53 and too much for the coin because of the toning.

    1st that's a beauty
very good pics but not in hand is a hard call.. that toning makes it hard to say rub, or weak strike...
being an "o" I'm giveing it the benefit of the doubt and calling it a slightly weak strike... That said..
    I'll go way out
    MS65+ $1200

AU58. The two pics look slightly different for some reason. Maybe it's me?

Where are the $1000+ coming from? In MS-65 the 1883-O is less than $250.

Looks like AU58, gonna say around $500 for price. It's a toner, but not in the style that most of the big money ones go for, from what I've seen.

I'll guess MS-63 and due to toning most buyers will pay more. $400 total?

Solid pass for me. I hate high priced toners.

I won this one many years ago for answering a quiz question at a NENA (New England Numismatic Association) convention. It's in an ANACS MS-63 "soap bar" holder.

PCGS graded this one MS 63. And it went for $873.56 with the fee at GC.
To me the coin looks like some of the more typical examples of AT that one sees in places like eBay where the seller has a handful that all look similar. I believe it is a mix of chemicals and heat that produces this result.
The grade is also a bit strange; if PCGS felt it was market acceptable, I would have figured it looked better than a 63 (unless the luster is subdued enough or there is a hint of wear and it became a super slider).

I saw this coin hovering in the low $300s with a few hours to go and contemplated a bid that would be in the $400-$450 range. For a coin that is AT, that would already be a significant price, but I somewhat liked it and figured it would be an interesting addition to my set. Fortunately for me, someone wanted it a lot more than me and likely saved me from a questionable buy (I might change that opinion if I later see it resell for a lot more).

Now that picture is probably much closer to "in hand" and I probably would have gone a hair lower (64 instead of 65) and lowered the price to 1k even.. but that's hindsite :D

I know I stole my 83 o for only $130 but like i said before people pay stupid money for toners and 2 sided rainbow toners are some of the highest I've seen...
I'll take PL over rainbows any day :D

I'm not sure where the 63 came from. If that's truly MS, it doesn't appear to have enough hits to get a 63...seems more like 65 to me. But, what do I know?

That was my thinking too-it has the look of a 64+/65 (especially if the luster is there).
