I bought a 1912 eagle mounted in an old bezel from a coworker. I have no interest in the bezel and removed it and was surprised to find no damage, however the rim is covered in a black goo that I want to remove. Is this a job for acetone?

Won't harm it, why not give it a try?

A picture of the black goo would be helpful.

Dip or soak it... you don't want to scratch by rubbing the surface with something abrasive.

Yeah.... That would have been helpful!! The freed coin is at home and I was making a hardware store run this morning and figured I would add a can of acetone to my list, hence my question... When I get home I'll sure photograph the freed eagle and add that photo to the thread.

I use the jewelry dip products from Walmart. They have for Gold or Silver. Very fast acting and have never had a problem.

    Hey, Randy.

Just take a flat file, and work the edges really hard . . . then send me everything that comes off!

That bezel and chain are looking more like brass in the new photos, but still might be worth a quick test.

Randy, send him what falls off, you can send me the rest of the ruined coin. You wouldn't still want it in your collection!

CoinCorgi Tell your dog I said hi!

I did exact thing Randy. A bit of warm water and the gook came right off. It's just human skin oils and misc. solids!

Actually..... That bezel and chain have a home. Yesterday my daughter called me in tears because the screw came out of the bezel on the necklace that I put together for her some years ago. She said she also wanted the chain to so it is on its way to Oklahoma to quell her tears.....

If the water doesn't do the job. Otherwise a soak on acetone and rolling a qtip along the edge I am sure would do the job. Don't forget the distilled water rinse.

Yep @CoinCorgi was on the mark. Half hour in a warm water bath and the ring of black goo is gone.

Since I don't own one of those, I didn't even know the rim had stars on it. Nice.
