When I was a kid we took field trips to the creek and dad’s workplace and such…. My girl is on a school field trip to our nations capital!! Today they went to the Smithsonian and she thought enough of the old man to send him photos of some of the Smithsonian coin collection….. Makes me feel like a rookie!….. And pissed that my best school field trip was to the Wonder Bread factory.

Many years ago I visited the Smithsonian and got to see the coin collection and the Rube Goldberg display.
    Sorry no photos.

Very nice, she enjoys the same good taste in coins that you do. Did you get a mini loaf of Wonder Bread after the class trip? My class did. We also had an in-school visit from the Hoffman Soda Company. They showed a film and every kid got a can of Hoffman soda.

That was why it was my most memorable school field trip!

My childhood field trips were so memorable that I don't remember any of them.

I vaguely recall seeing some coin exhibits in the Smithsonian ages ago, probably around 1982 or so. I hope to go back someday.

If you're interested, there's a TV channel that shows items from the museum i believe. :)

You can look up tons of coins on their website. Of course, you have to know what they have and what you're looking for.

Thanks! Why are the coins held like that in the display. Won't they damage?

I’ve been to several of the numerous buildings holding the Smithsonian but never to see the coins. At least she sent you photos. :)

I have no idea. I've seen this type of display in almost every museum that has coins. One can hope they're inserted with extreme care and never move around. Those prongs in the first image look really tight though and it makes me cringe.

I’ve always enjoyed the Smithsonian collection. Tip: There are coins in many displays outside the numismatic gallery. Their method of holding coins gives me pause. Looks like metal hooks maybe with a vinyl coating on the tips. :(

The prongs are normal. The thing about museaums is that they love to clean coins, and they often don't do it well. Part of the problem is the light the coins are exposed to for long periods of time if they are on display.

And I wonder how inert the fabric is that the coins are clamped against.

On my trip to the Smithsonian many years ago the only thing on display was the Lilly gold coin collection. For many years that was the only display until they ripped it out to use the room to allow a view from above of the restoration work on the Star Spangled Banner.

Gold doesn't impress me and at the time I was just getting interested in coins so I don't remember much about it. (give me a break I was 6 years old at the time)
