This 4 Thaler was the most I ever spent on a coin. Had to sell it to help pay my part of the cost of the cancer operations I had. It was a very sad day to have to sell it. But, I'm rebuilding a new collection. It's good to be back on this forum, my old name on here was regandon. 4 ThalerB.jpg

I've never paid much for a coin, any coin. World coins were rarely over 20 or $40 with 5 or $10 being more in my comfort range. But I've been lucky and collected at the right time so I have lots and lots of coins that sell for pretty good money. I haven't sold many yet and know from experience that just because a coin is "worth" $2000 it doesn't mean you can get it, especially with the oddball stuff I bought.

I think the most I've paid was about $45 for a really nice Puerto Rican 40 C in VF that I traded off for a couple hundred dollars. It's a nice coin to own at any price. The biggest mistake I made was passing a startling Gem 1797 British cartwheel for a song. I passed on some really great stuff because I never liked big premiums. When I did pay more I traded it off for things with smaller premiums. People thought I was nuts trading $40 coins for "40" $1 coins but the ones I got were ones with good potential. A lot of the excess just went into poundage.

These are way scarcer than people think. I've seen hoards of PR coins and there are very few of the 40c and they tend to be low grade and cull. Nice collectible ones are few and far between.

You will have more money available to bid on that Greek RRR coin in a few days.

Absolutely stunning! A true german states treasure.

I posted this once before somewhere on this forum, but thought this might be a good time to repost the pic of the puzzle I bought at the ANA museum in Colorado Springs a few summers ago. 1685-3T-puzzle.jpg

I have put in yet another record bid:D, but I don't expect to win the coin tomorrow, since they seem to be really popular among rich collectors in France, and a little less so in a few other countries.

Yes, but if that bid had gone through, I wouldn't have been able to buy this rarer Bengal Sultanate Gold Tanka.

The new hammer price record holder at 7000 EUR is this Nasrid Gold Dinar of Yusuf I (minted sometime between 1333 and 1354):

This is the one that takes the top spot in my collection. 4 Thaler minted for the 88th birthday of August II. He died later that year.
