It wasn't limited to ancient society either. In some of the original American colonies, it was also a capital offense. Speaking of hypocrisy, your mentioning of ancient coins brings up another interesting thought. Carr supporters claim that his pieces do not run afoul of 18 U.S.C. 485-490 and therefore can never be described as counterfeits. Interestingly some of these same individuals and their ilk frequently refer to fake ancient coins as counterfeits despite the fact the U.S. counterfeiting laws do not appear to apply to ancient coins. The one federal appeals court to discuss the issue thought that interpreting the statutes to apply to defunct governments and/or countries would raise constitutional questions.
Not when you and your sidestick cbd hijacked to discuss Carr in the first place..... start another thread on Carr, oh that's right, you did.... how did that end up exactly?
This thread was already on a bobsled ride to hell when I first commented thank you very much (especially after comments made by a moderator). My posts have at least stayed with the Carr theme.
I've got an idea, Charlie! Why don't you start some direct name calling instead of pussy-footing around, interjecting your hit and run insinuations? Then maybe you'll get this thread locked before it gets to page 50 and you won't actually have to do any critical thinking!
What's a "sidestick?" And what is he talking about @Coinchemistry 2012 ? Did I start a DC thread that I am unaware of?
The FTC disagrees with you. Will someone pull the GBI case where it discusses how the HPA was meant to protect idiots? I'm too lazy to bother anymore.
That is the worst post I've ever seen on this or any other coin forum. I have NEVER requested that anyone post on my behalf. If someone is genuinely interested in this area of exonumia and wants to share, then too bad for you if you don't like it.
It is certainly no secret who has produced these various fantasy-date over-strikes. So no need for a special "code" to figure out.
Even worse than the post from RWB below?: Q: “Can someone summarize the DCarr mega-thread?” R: "Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy buys big press. Boy makes fake coins. Girl, who is now a Fed Judge, sentences Boy to 10-20 for counterfeiting. Press turns out to be friendly android."
Here is another interesting question: Your supporters say that you restore impaired coins to works of art; doesn't that make you a coin doctor? If so, doesn't that put you on the same playing field as other coin doctors (and ones likely even criticized by your own supporters)? I don't see the addition of a "fantasy" date to be any different than the addition of a "fantasy mintmark."
@dcarr ... To further explain my comments, I have no issue with your exonumia. I don't know whether they fall afoul of counterfeit laws or not - frankly I don't care. I just am a bit disgusted by cascade's shilling (no other word for it in my mind). I am only a bit annoyed by the attackers. Not sure why I have the different reactions to the two sides. I just wish everyone was more honest about their postion on the matter and not so biased by personal feelings/love affair with a freaking piece of exonumia! There, I've exposed my bias a bit. Carry on.
Everytime I see @dcarr pop up, I grab my popcorn and enjoy the show. Seriously. I feel like this is a topic that has been beaten to a pulp, with no way to convert anybody to either side. It's like trying to change a hardcore democrat to Tea Party. Won't happen. So what's the point? All that happens is a bunch of arguing and name calling, leading to a rift in the coin collecting community. If you don't like it, you don't have to like it. I personally hate ancient coins as a whole but I don't insult anybody else for enjoying them.
We have never insulted anyone for purchasing or collecting Carr's works. The criticism has been in putative "logic" of some and against the creator of the works. I wouldn't attack someone for collecting Carr's pieces anymore than I would someone who collects contemporary counterfeits or high quality counterfeits such as the Omega gold coins or Henning nickels. I don't criticize those collectors at all.
Ah yes, I see. But still, these discussions are like trying to convince your racist uncle that interracial marriage is an OK thing LOL
