(not sure when this was but I was when they were really cheap) one of my friends named Ricky. was taking out a bed from his dads farm. so his dad was help him take it out one side was heavy and the other was not. so they opened up the head board and 100s of Morgan dollars fell out. and that's the end of the story. do you have any story's of when someone or you found a hoard of something?
My mom's parents lost a substantial nest-egg when the banks failed at the beginning of the Great Depression. Forever after, they always kept money hidden under their mattress, just in case. Unfortunately, they liked their comfort, so it was paper money.
I had a great uncle that died when I was 12. Didn't really know him, but he didn't believe in banks either. Problem was, he never even told his wife where he hid the money. On top of that, he didn't have one single place where he hid it (you know, in case a thief found just one or two of his hiding spots). When he died, his kids kept finding money hidden all over the house for MONTHS. Dozens and dozens of places! And a year later they STILL didn't know if it was all found.... made them want to delay the sale of the home for fear that someone new would come in and find 10k or something.
Yup. When we moved into our first house, and went to remove the hideous window treatments in the master BR, two twenties fell out of one of them. Alas, we didn't find any other treasure -- although, oddly, there was one silver quarter in one of the medicine cabinets. (This was in 1996, so it was quite a surprise.) I remember hearing one family member saying, "if something sudden happens to us, check ALL the drawers before you get rid of any furniture." And they have a lot of furniture...
My sister's first husband (don't ask...she's on #4 now) had a grandmother to die and her idiotic family was BURNING old books she had when a couple of hundred dollar bills fluttered out of one of them. They found several more, but who knows how many got burned.
I have recently purchased a house that was built in 1973. It has had two owners and now me. The other day I was taking an old built in unit off the wall in the master bedroom and under the bottom of the cabinet I found a plastic tube with 16 Morgan Silver dollars and also there were three gold coins there as well. There was a piece of paper with the estimated prices written by the original owner of the house dated 1980 so this means this stuff sat their for over 20 years when they sold the house to the second owners and they never had a clue it was there.
When I remodeled my parents' bathroom for them about 15 years ago I tore out old cabinets. Mom, who grew up during the Great Depression, had difficulty throwing away anything. I found some incredibly useless items that I tossed when she wasn't looking, but also found bags of coins (much of it 90% silver) from the days she was a waitress in their Ma & Pa café. She had no recollection it was even hidden away. She always told us that when she died we should not throw away any magazines or books. She predeceased our father. After his death we took her advice, finding several hundred dollars tucked in magazines, bags of coins in flower vases, etc. Steve
Give it a little time... we seem to be headed in that direction and it'll be back in fashion soon enough.
I don't know the mints he was not a collecteor im younger then him though and I don't know when it happpend.
