Oh it is as phony as a three dollar bill, but that counterfeit artist had some skills! My buddy has owned it since the 1970's so it isn't some recent Chinese knock-off.... When I was young I dreamed about the 1913 V-nickel. It was my first Whitman folder and the Whitman folks were kind enough to plug the 1913 hole with a cardboard disk and that intrigued me so I hopped on the bus and rode down to the library to check out a book and find out why (amazing the stuff we had to do before interwebs).... I dreamed about that 1913 nickel for years and I would settle for a contemporary counterfeit!
I’ve only seen one on eBay as of yesterday, but it had the word “Copy” on the reverse that was too big for my liking lol.
This is the reverse of the 1916-D dime in my old Whitman book. Another contemporary counterfeit that I have owned since the 1980's..... Dang, I better stop posting about counterfeit coins. Folks might be getting the wrong impression!
I wouldn't buy the one on top (the shiny one), I think it's a details grade coin. Plus the other one has a sharper strike (see the left side corncob in the wreath and obverse stars).
I'm actually glad you said that, though more people seem to be fighting more over that one, I don't like the suspiciously unnatural luster of it in comparison to the other one.
Currently in the lead with this one (not pictured between the other two) but if I don't win it: it's no loss. https://www.ebay.com/itm/396279491215
I don't know what grade you're looking for, but I found a couple that you might be interested in. https://www.ebay.com/itm/335709648642 https://www.ebay.com/itm/286050357209 https://www.ebay.com/itm/256645740269
They can run fast if they have too. Like with the 1921 peace dollar The one million coins struck were all made during the last four days of 1921.
Ooooh I like that 1912-D lot! I'm just trying to get a finer example of one (I have the PDS set but the current Denver minted 1912 I have is bleh). I'm not turning a blind eye to that lot though, I have an unhealthy obsession with Liberty Nickels for some reason. Saw an 1897 with die cracks as well I'm debating on bidding on
Holy crap, I didn't know that. Bet those mint employees were drinking pots of coffee at a time during then
No, she is beauty-ful, in all of her movement, where the coin also is a beauty in its inert state! I suspect if Mr. Milton has/had a wife, he appreciated the company of both specially, as I'm certain I'd also. I appreciate having shared, knowing one of them, and believe either would be appreciated as any I've ever known. JMHO
Nice, solid graded specimen you've got there! I'm putting this series together, raw and in AU to MS63, and lack the three keys. I'll spend the market, encapsulated, and crack them out like I've done with a few others. ICG, ANACS, SEGS and the like simply for the authenticy factor paying those prices. NGC or PCGS I'd leave alone.
There’s a seller on eBay I’ve been watching who’s been selling REALLY nice AU-MS raw Libs. I’ve bid on at least 3 already trying to acquire years I don’t have yet but have been outbid every single time.
Have you learned how to sniper yet? It's no secret, only knuckleheads bid before 10 seconds left (or less). Pick your best offer and bid your maximum bid pain at the last second. It's so prevalent I think it benefits sellers now when the waters have been good and chummed up by not having a minimum reserve requirement. I will add: Bidding early only hurts yourself, unless you are willing to spend way more than market value......and even at that, it only attracts more attention to the item, FOMO.
