I'm checking to see if there's a site I've missed that has a trove of coin images (searchable by date/denomination of course). I use the PCGS gallery, Heritage, Stack's and GC archives for research. Usually these are more than enough, but recently I've been looking for a couple obscure varieties and one for example the best I could find was an AU55. I'd prefer to have an MS image. Is there another site with tons of coin images to search through? (Yes, there is also ebay, but the images tend to be garbage and they only last for a limited time)
I think you have the majority of sites for what you're looking for down pat. Is there a particular coin that you have in mind? Maybe start there?? Ever use "Google Images"?
I appreciate the thought but nobody specifies for example 1903-S 10c Reverse 3. You have to pull up all the 1903-S dimes and look at the images to determine whether it is or isn't. Yes I've used image search but that is definitely not going to pick out the thick ribbon versus the thin ribbon. I just tried it for grins and it was "smart" enough to pull up some Barber dimes from random years. My eyes are way smarter than "AI" at this point... Edit - I'm doing this for two reasons, one to count and get a proportion of the variety in order to evaluate scarcity, and two, get the best image available for presentation purposes. The first goal is achievable with the sources I've listed, but the second is more difficult for certain ones because the examples are all low grades and/or poorly imaged.
The only other site I know of you might try is Collectors Corner. The site is a large, centralized posting site for dozens of coin dealers. I also try to locate specific varieties and sometimes have good luck with their magnification "eye" system. On some occasions I find the same coin at the dealer site is not magnified enough. hope this helps. good luck, James
Thanks, I poked around there but it appears that I can't search for a specific coin, like "1903-S 10c." I can browse the collections but there's no guarantee that there's a photo associated with the entries, so it's too much manual digging around. PCGS registry seems to have the same problem. Thanks, this one seems useful, at least for coins currently for sale. Some good images. There doesn't appear to be any archive though, so I'd have to catch the examples when they're live.
The only way you might get archives is to go the the individual dealer sites. David Lawrence, Gerry Fortin and a number of other dealers on there have archives I know. On the other hand i used this site to cherrypick several coins. 1838 F 106A with pie wedge 1839-O Huge "0" 1843/1843 RPD 301
Thanks, I didn't realize those two had archives. I'll keep them in mind for future searches. Pretty thin on both but I did manage to find another AU55 for the 1903-S. Great image and probably good enough for my purposes. I have this one from Stack's but it's a little washed out. I'm just surprised I guess that I can't find a UNC example.
I don't think I can spam the whole membership but I could ask the varieties team, good idea. It would be nice to have better 1901-S Rev3 and 1905-S Rev2 images too. Those three are the scarcest ones. Basically I'm working on a slideshow of all the dime transition varieties. All I have is Open Office Impress though and it sucks. It keeps dropping images after I save the file.
That's a thought but probably not worth the effort; the images I have are good enough to see the types. I'll use the slideshow file to try to convince ANACS to attribute these varieties (see my 2025 goals in that thread) and maybe do a presentation at the local coin club someday.
