Soak the whole thing in vinegar. It's no more damaging, and gives a more even look.

Technically I searched a box of pennies a while ago; all I can remember is I found 6 wheat pennies and 4 2009's.

So let's call this one penny box #2:

    Wheat cents: 1944
    2009: 2009 professional life, 2009-D professional life x3, 2009 presidency, 2009-D presidency
1968 and 1973-D in really nice condition
1985 Canadian cent (blunt 5 I'm pretty sure)

Not sure if these are anything special, but saving them for now:
    2024-D x24

Not sure how rare 2024's are but only about 1% of the box was 2024, so... will save a roll worth at least.

Not sure how often I'll do pennies but it's nice for a change of pace every once in a while.

I was back and forth about whether or not I care about saving 2009 pennies, but if I'm searching them may as well look for them; something else to look for besides just wheat cents. Not hurting for space atm lol so why not save them.

Way I see it, if it's going to cause some damage either way, may as well damage a smaller area of the coin.

Not sure if I'm going to try to collect Buffalo nickels by date & mintmark, but I have quite a few now, so may as well try to identify the dateless ones I get. None of the dateless buffaloes I have, have mintmarks I'm pretty sure; nic-a-date costs about $15 a bottle, and none of them would be worth $15 or more if identified lol. But at some point I want to know what I have, so may as well try to date them.

You can put it in white vinegar with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide.
The date will usually appear (use a bright light and some magnification like an eye loupe if you can't see it with the naked eye). However, if you use too much HP, or leave it in too long the coin will have an unnatural whitish appearance. So for any rare dates this is a Catch 22. I can't read the date, now I can read the date but the coin has been etched and the value of the rare coin is a fraction of what it was.

I’ve always wanted to do this. I think I’ll experiment in the future with cull buffalo nickels to find the right balance.

Another thousand. The box is all the 1956 and earlier nickels I saved from the last 3,000 nickels I went though.

#5/10 bag of 1,000 nickels. That 1943-P in the bottom left is a keeper! Sadly, it won’t straight grade due to a scratch on the face, but it’s got clash marks behind his neck, delamination, and almost full steps.

#10/10 final bag of 1,000 nickels. My last bag, and likely the last time I’ll ever get such amazing finds. The box has all the 1956 and earlier I’ve pulled from all the bags.

    Nickel box #23:
Mixed feelings... I didn't find much, but one I did find was one I needed: a 1944-P silver war nickel, so there's that!

    Also found:
    1940 x2
    1941
    1941-D
    1946
    1951
    1952
    1952-S
    1956-D
    1957-D x2
    1958-D
    1959-D x2

Down to only needing 5 more nickels to finish the set: 1938-D, 1939-S, 1942-S, 1944-S, and 1950-D.

    Search continues!
