I bought this coin a few days ago, but I'm paying for it in 2017 (first budget-blood of 2017) Yah, I am a huge fan of these Rose-coins from Rhodes ... I think that they're beautiful This particular winner, has an amazingly generous flan, plus a very cool double-strike on the obverse (a 2nd head in the background, which doesn't distract the viewer's view of the wonderful primary strike of Helios) ... oh, and then add-in that ridiculously sweet toning and I think this baby is a total winner!! Please put your coin-hands together and welcome my first coin-purchase of 2017 ... Rhodes (Islands of Caria) AR Hemidrachm Date: 88-84 BC Diameter: 14.42 mm Weight: 1.2 grams Obverse: Radiate head of Helios facing slightly right. Reverse: Rose with bud right; P - O at sides star right, ΜΗΝΟΔΩΡΟΣ above (Menodoros, magistrate) References: Jenkins 247 Characteristics: Obverse double struck
Whoa!! ... I almost forgot to add-in these inviting words ... => "PLEASE" post whatever you think is coin-relevant and/or irrelevant!! I love you guys ... I'm hoping that this is gonna be a sweet coin-year, my friends!!
Thanks ... Well, like I said above, I'm a huge fan of these Rose-coins from Rhodes ... => so here are a few more sweet examples from previous coin-years:
Way cool, double-strike, toning, everything. Nice kick-off to 2017. I will go for IRRELEVANT, as my LAST coin of 2016 were 3 from Warren Esty. And I found out that he GREW UP in the town that I JUST moved to! Roman Republic Imperatorial period. Associated with the famous Lepidus. Spain. Lepida-Celsa Large. 31 mm. Holed. Struck 44-36 BC by C. Balbus L. Porcius City name: Colonia Victrix Ivlia Lepida Head of Victory with palm branch over shoulder/Bull right Named after Lepidus who was governor of Spain when the city attained colonial status. RPI 262, plate 19. Very visible with excellent natural highlights.
Congrats and Happy 2017, Steve! I like face, toning and double strike but especially love the extra trimmings! This one unexpectedly snuck in as my last purchase of 2016 thanks to JA. Not in hand yet, but will almost certainly be my first arrival of 2017. It's also got the double strike and generous flan thing going for it . GORDIAN III AE25. 6.5g. THRACE, Anchialus, circa AD 238-244. Varbanov 608 (R5). O: ΓOPΔIANOC AV KA; Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left, holding spear and shield. R: AΓXIAΛEΩN; Cybele enthroned left between two lions, holding phiale and resting on drum. Seller's notes: "What, I say, WHAT in tarnation happened to this coin?"
yummy, yummy => fellas, I'm totally lovin' the two irrelevant coin-posts (they fit right-in!!) Thanks for posting ... I hope that you dudes are having a great day-1 of 2017
I love the square incuse punch on the OP coin. I can't really explain why. Just that little incuse square inside that irregular ovoid flan just really looks neat, that's all. Plus these have such an appealing design. I'd post my Macedonian imitation of it again, but that would risk becoming a bore.
We've had a pretty fricken fun year up here in the North => here are a few photos from 2016 ... => I hope that 2017 is just as sweet!! Cheers to you!! ... thanks for making my coin-year a wonderful experience!!
Great detail on your coin Steve! Love the dog photos. Wonder if my own dog would have liked the snow! (I'm guessing not lol)
Cool OP coin to start the year! Like Lord Marcovan, I think the incuse reverse is pretty cool. Seeing how the coin was minted in the 80s (the best decade for alternative rock music ever) ok it was the 80s BC, using a reverse incuse is really kind of retro for the time. Wonder why they did that? Lets hear it for the Rhodes crew! Rhodes Didrachm, 1983 Obverse: head of David Bowie with blonde, spiky curls performing on the "Lets Dance" tour, reverse: Stevie Ray Vaughan playing guest guitar on the title track (look it up).
Thanks geki ... that's a great coin (thanks for posting, my coin-friend) Lord => "please" post your sweet Macedonian example ... I recall being very jealous of it!! (oh, and you've come to the wrong thread if you think that I'm gonna get bored of seeing other people's coins!!) => bring it!!
Wow Steve, do you have a rest sometimes ? I'm almost exhausted from seeing all the marvels you show Nothing relevant here, nor irrelevant, but day one looked like this this morning around where I live Q
gorgeous photo ... Happy New Year, Qude ... oh, and like an old pack-mule, I only rest after I've been brushed and put away wet
