I just found this going thru a crap ton of pennies from my aunts estate. If it is a mint error, is it grease in the planchet or struck wrong or what? Thanks for your expertise and knowledge. ☺️
I wanna say it has been damaged. It may be a split planchet, but I doubt it because the obverse looks severely corroded. It may have been cleaned at some point, but that is either heavy damage, or a nice looking error, and a good candidate for either.
Yes, much better. It appears to be an error. I'm confident it's a " struck through a late die cap." Struck Through Die Cap Lincoln Cent
Way to go @SensibleSal66 I’m, you by hot it correct. A split planchet would not have as rim like that.
There is CAM and WAM. These are two different varieties for Lincoln reverses. They are transitional errors meaning that the Proof reverse die was used in place of the Business strike die. In 1992 the rare AM is a Close AM, in 1998-2000 the rare reverse is a Wide AM. Here is a link to the reverse design varieties for Lincoln Memorial cents. http://varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/Memorial Reverse Design Varieties.htm PS I looked at the date on your cent, at first it looks like a 92' but I think it is a 98' which would make yours the common variety.
Yes to kinda rare Probably would sell for $100-250 on ebay No to grading Anyone who collects these would know what it is
