They have certainly embellished the design a little.

I doubt a coin meant for circulation would have that.

Now today, you get a ticket to go cash out. Certainly not as much fun.

I do know of some small casinos that still use coins - the problem is counterfeiting of coins and especially casino tokens became quite an issue about a decade ago.

New dies and collars had to made. Although Denver had 32 reverse dies saved from 1934-36, inspection showed they were in very poor shape and could not be used.

My wife is a legal nurse. The workers compensation insurance companies had a lot to do with the modern slot machines: back injuries from lugging bags of change.

Interesting. I would have never considered that. It makes sense though.

Hasn't worked yet for bank employees and coinstar employees - they lug around bags or push heavy carts all the time.

The switch from coins to paper in paper out slots, I believe has more to do with
the incredible amount of time saved, as well as incorrect accounting. Rather than ergonomics.

Reportedly, Frank Gasparro re-modeled the Peace Dollar design for 1964.
Along with that 1964 Morgan Dollar tooling, original 1964 Peace Dollar tooling was also discovered. So if Congress wanted the US Mint to make 1964-D Peace Dollars again, from the original tooling, it could be done. Any original 1964-D Peace Dollars already out there would be basically indistinguishable from the new issue.

Interesting...I wonder how the 1964-D design would have compared to the 1935 Peace Dollar. Would have been as different as the 1921 Morgan was from the 1904?

Also, a couple people have mentioned 1964 Morgan tooling. Was there a plan to mint Morgan's in 1964 as well?

If you do some searching online you can probably find images of the 1964 Peace and Morgan dollar master hubs. They were found in the Mint vaults this past year. They were planing on striking Peace dollars at Denver and Morgans at Philadelphia. While we have known about the peace dollars since 1964 or 65, it wasn't learned that they had planned the Morgans until the master hubs were discovered and subsequent research turned up the coinage plans. And yes there are some slight differences in the designs between the 64's and the earlier coins.

That is fascinating to me. I had taken a step back from the hobby for the last couple years (family and business stuff) so I hadn't kept up on the breaking news. That is amazing.

I think there was some ambivalence as to which design it could have been. Since hubs and tooling has been verified for both Morgan and Peace dollars, it really could have been either one. The Morgan design was more popular, but the mintage with the Peace design was more recent. Given the rumors about a 1964 Peace dollar, it is more likely that it would, indeed, have been a 1964 Peace Dollar. I do have the pleasure of owning both Daniel Carr fantasy issues-- the Peace and the Morgan of said date. So, I guess I have the best of both fantasy worlds.

Did the legislation that created the 1964 dollar specify a design?

There wasn't legislation in 1964-5 - an act of congress, they were using legislation that authorised the Peace dollar back in 1921.
