Is this another dan carr counterfeit abomination? why is this site being flooded with this stuff this weekend? $5 Indians were not struck in 1933... whatever this thing is it isn't "real"
LOL. Well, actually it is REAL. It was over struck on an actual Five Dollar Indian. So, yes it is. And it was struck by Daniel Carr. Methinks you are not too open-minded... Seemingly a lot of hostility on a Sunday morn, Sir. In any case it is a very attractive coin as are many of his others. Perhaps there are many about because others share in enjoyment of his products. Please feel free to post your own coins.
The lump of gold it was struck on might have been a real coin before dcarr defaced it. It *was* a real coin. Now it's just a counterfeit. And no, I am not open-minded at all about these tokens. We've debated, discussed, and determined for many years.... I made up my mind long ago where I stood on these things. And I have absolutely no idea why so many people seem to be so excited about his trinkets.
Because they are beautiful, and well-executed & if I may say, of course you would have no idea. They are not other than as put forward and certainly are not a counterfeit - what would they be a counterfeit of, Sir? LOL. To each their own, so stay true to yourself. Might as well throw this in: Hopefully you are not a scientist, and certainly have a mental block.
Don’t deceive yourself. That no 1933 half eagles were coined by the US Mint does not free Mr. Carr from counterfeiting charges. Close inspection of the reverse image reveals that he impressed this right-sized coin with the words, “FIVE DOLLARS” over the original. That constitutes counterfeiting all by itself. Had he changed any / all other details on the coin, and left the denomination alone, he might have nothing to worry about.
That would be a FALSE statement. The fact that you can see the new "FIVE DOLLARS" over the old "FIVE DOLLARS" absolutely does not. You may want to follow the logic but I'll not take the time to school you.
He's never lied about what they are, or tried to pretend they're something that they are not. Altering coins or currency is only illegal if it's done for a fraudulent purpose. No legal expert here but pretty sure it's not considered "counterfeiting" if there's not a real thing for it to be a counterfeit of. (The same reason it's not illegal to make, buy, or sell those novelty million dollar bills; there's not a real million dollar bill for them to be a counterfeit of.) I don't have a high opinion of Daniel Carr's alterations either, but the government is well aware of his actions and have not filed charges against him. Take that as you will. I don't own any of his work but if I did I wouldn't buy any of his altered coins. but some of his original medals, maybe.
Exactly, They are called Fantasy pieces for a reason. It just seems that some folks can't wrap their head around that. They have to act like children anytime one is posted. Their only intent is to try and press their will and opinion on everyone else. PS I have no problem discussing why they should be considered counterfeits or not. But, attacking someone over their token or fantasy overstrike isn't right. I just wish that they keep their comments to their selves. If they were illegal the US would have shut DC down and thrown him in jail.
To be fair, sharing opinions on things is one of the main purposes of a forum like this. As for myself, I don't like them either, but I just don't buy them. I don't feel a need to tell other people what to do with their money, unless they're seeking advice in that regard. As long as people understand what they're buying, and he's not making any false or misleading statements about what he's selling, I see no problem here. Don't like them, don't buy them.
There is sharing, and then there is crapping on a thread to shut it down. Seems someone above has their panties in a ruffle this weekend cause he did the same thing to my threads. It's unnecessary. If I would have saw one of his $5 golds on Friday, I would have bought one.
The problem isn't just dcarr's likers and supporters - its also the aftermarket. When someone who doesn't know the infamous counterfeiter and his craft tries to find info on the 1933 Indian head $5, they are going to get really confused. They will have no idea what this artificial piece is. And it isn't just this one.... by now, he's made hundreds of fake pieces. He's always said he'd never make anything that actually existed, but literally this morning someone posted a date and mintmark that was real, with a small alteration that most non-collectors would miss.
Nobody cares for your opinion or will. Stick to what you like and stay out of the rest. Your opinion on the subject has zero influence. No one is selling these as a mint product.
"Most non-collectors" would see a cent, worth one cent. It's conceivable that someone might (despite Carr's strict and oft-repeated instruction to the contrary) offer a Carr piece as an unaltered US rarity, and someone else might pay a premium for it. But every day on eBay there are thousands of road-rash cents, dryer quarters, and vise jobs offered as "RARE MINT ERRORS" at high prices, and some of them sell. This is not a problem that we or Dan Carr have the power to solve.
Everyone's entitled to their opinions, including the opinion that other people's opinions are wrong. Unless someone is saying something that is flat out provably untrue (or violating the forum rules), they shouldn't be shut up just because you disagree or their opinion is unpopular. I may completely disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. More to the direct point, people should have the responsibility to educate themselves about what they spend their money on. As long as the seller isn't making any false or misleading claims about what they're selling (including lying by omission), I don't see that anything illegal or morally questionable has been done. And if someone wants to spend their money on something you don't like, fully understanding what it is they're spending their money on, I see it as their own business. Please do indeed keep trying to educate people on things and what they should be worth, but no need to attack someone whenever they talk about
Here we go again with the yes to Daniel Carr's creations or the hell no, he's a counterfeiter! Personally I like his creations and he also does a lot to promote our hobby with the ANA so in my book he's free to create designs or pontificate over other designs.
