Haha, yes! Who here doesn't save every wheatie, pre-1950 nickel and smooth silver coin they come across? Well, I do anyway. Just this week I was browsing through my stuff and thought "my goodness, what am I going to do with all these average circulated, meh pieces?" Then I put them away, LOL
What to do with all the common, circulated coinage - I started a roll set by date and mm. I keep a full roll swap out the worst in that roll with a better find. Pretty soon you have a VF or better roll. Place the ‘worst’ date/mm into a bucket. If you have the chance to spawn a new hobbyist, give them the bucket to go through. They can build themselves a fair circulated set. If lucky, they may tell you about their gaps. That’s where your roll set comes into play. You may upgrade a few dates and mms for them and fill some gaps. The hope here is that they catch the bug…the special kind of geekiness we joke about here. There’s delight in what we collect and preserve. Stamps, war items…coins or maybe ticket stubs and bottle caps. Getting someone started is a joy…for me anyway.
Has it been decided if this thread will have its own forum yet? If I don't come to this thread often it tends to take a little more work in finding it, and I have never done any CRH. Would be great if it did have its own, just one click. I am always finding/looking through my change. I just don't always post my finds.
Post when you can. Timeliness isn’t a requirement. It’s just fun seeking what others are finding about. I usually toss my pocket change into a pot for closer inspection. Hot finds get posted more timely.
While visiting my family over the holidays my sister had a small container of pocket change. I had a brief rush when the 1943 penny stared at me with its copper complexion. Unfortunately the magnet test revealed it was of crusty steel composition. Shown along with this penny were a few additional noteworthy discoveries.
The last Steelie I found in the wild was at a bar. Poorly lit, it was left on the table next to me and despite the poor lighting, I thought something odd about it. I picked it off the table and popped it in my pocket for later. When I got to a better light source, I could see the date. Funny that it be left all alone on a table to be discovered by a collector.
1976 Canadian cent And change from a vending machine: 2024-D Zitkala-Sa quarter, first I've seen in circulation so far
I heard 2024 nickels and dimes are scarce. I haven't found any yet. I heard the same of 2024 cents, but I've found a few of those, so not sure of those. I hold on to them just in case until I hear otherwise. On a side note, I find way more buffalo and war nickels while CRH than I do 2009s. Crazy.
Check them for varieties and send em on to the next collector. They might need it for an album. Something standard about wheats is they have traded at 5 or under for the past 20 yrs.
Agree with P&G - check for varieties. Fun gathering a couple LWC’s in a day! After a long drought, I saw a star note spit out of the self checkout kiosk last night. I didn’t expect that I would get two notes back-to-back. The J series note is from a low production sheet run.
