I frequent that site. I didn’t know how much the smudge and ding take away from the value. I can get it for half of the 40 grade value.Do you see anything that would lead you to believe it may not be real. Any help is appreciated.

I'm always suspicious when I see a coin under 1.5 million minted and if it's real. Need to check weight, size and metal test (ping test) and besides. it's a "raw" coin.

buyer beware of Chinese fakes on these, even buying certified it sticks in the back of your mind on the authenticity.

Unfortunately it takes longer to authenticate thru the TPG process unless you have an expert on these thats your next door neighbor I would pass.

    Expert neighbor.... lol.gif
My neighbor........... He's so clueless. He has to put up a million red markers in the ground because obviously he can't find his sidewalk or driveway when snowplowing. lol.gif No one else has that problem and never will. New sidewalks.
    On to the coin....
It will take longer to get it back. How does this work?

I would check it against VAM and see if it matches one.

Check the seller location and feedback. Look at Heritage sold prices for Details coins. I see an XF Details Scratched sold this month for $480 and an XF Details Cleaned sold in December for $420. "half of the 40 grade value" isn't always a good indicator since PCGS shows $800 but recent HA sales are all around $600.

Thanks for the excellent feedback. The seller has 7K+ feedback at 100%. I messaged him about the authenticity of the coin and he said he had 40+ years in the coin collecting industry and guaranteed it was authentic. Like I said earlier in this post, he gives a 30 day return policy if not completely satisfied. I think I’m gonna roll the dice at the $350 offer. I sold 13-1921 Morgan’s (4-Ds, 9-S) locally yesterday to fund the purchase. None were graded but all looked to be in 25-40 condition. Thanks again for your help.

Sounds to me like it's worth the roll of the dice. That kind of feedback, 30-day return policy, I seen worse, friend. Questionable whether it's cleaned or just run down due to wear. Based on those pictures, it looks to me like it's just wear. That deep gash above the jaw is going to play in the market, but at $350, IMO, shake hands, it's a deal.

I would only buy that coin from a well known, trustworthy source, especially if it’s raw. Welcome to CT.

What’s your opinion on the smudged L in the word dollar?

I think it's more likely to get Details - Rim Damage or Cleaned. That spot on the reverse is probably pretty flat on the edge. Seems like a good buy at 350 though.

I would rather save my money and buy a piece without the problems. This coin will never great a straight grade from a legitimate TPG because of scape on the “L.” The rim nicks would probably do it in also.

Looks like a hit by another silver dollar happened to cause that damage. It’s a nice date and mint mark with just over 600,000 minted but with it’s the damage it will never straight grade. The lower price reflects the damage.

    This.

    I don't think it's a fake, but I'd avoid it anyway.
