There looks to be a cud or perhaps some type of doubling on the lower loop on the "S" MM. Could this be an RPM? I couldn't really find any info on this - have any of you come across a 1968-S penny like this? There are also heavy numbers of scratches on both sides of the coin, but those appear to be die scratches. One of the reverse pics, the scratch lines appear to run below the devices. So, maybe heavy cleaning / polishing of the die somehow adversely affected the MM, causing some sort of cud or other doubling (?). Sorry for the poor pics, esp. of the MM. Maybe I'll take out my USB microscope if it's too difficult to discern what's going on with the MM given the pics I took. Thanks in advance!
It might be a small die chip, but it's definitely not a cud. A cud is a die break that forms on the rim and extends into the field. Chris
I was hoping that @iPen would chime in and see the post. His Pic is tilted back and it hard to see the full detail of the S.
Yes, I think that one's it! So this one must be RPM-001. Here are some USB microscope pics. Not very clear, but on hand, it looks like the pics above. The die scratches show heavily, both in person and from the pics. So, RPM + obverse die scratches + reverse die scratches!
What we are looking for is the small detail of the Second S, showing at the top of the mm. I am still having a hard time seeing it. The chips look the same. The Photo in v vista is an early die state. Your cent is probably mds. Hence the Die polishing.
