Is this a S-274 or 275? It definitely doesn’t have the comet! And i don’t see any part of the over date. Or i can be dead wrong and it be none of them.
Detector find? Interesting earthen patina. Unfortunately, I am not the person to ask about Sheldon varieties.
Great find! You dig that? If so, must have been exciting. The only Draped Bust cent I ever dug myself during my detecting days is a corroded slug. But sometimes, in well-drained sandy soils down here (coastal SE GA), they can come out pretty nice, though. Here's a nice 1798 S-166 dug by my local detecting buddy. A number of them have turned up around here on old plantation sites. For some reason, several high grade S-166 coins have been found around here. I speculate that a keg of them must have been shipped to this area before 1800.
Yes i found it. This is my current project im working on that i found this fall. 1794 i soak it every now and again in some electrolysis. It’s a S-72.
What a thrill, to dig stuff like that. What other sort of things have you found? Without revealing too much about the specific locations of your sites, tell us what kind of sites they are.
I’ve been detecting close to 40 years now. I’ve been very lucky and fortunate to live in an old area, where stuff like this is in my back yard. Patients is key. Knowing you’re going to dig lots of junk with good in the middle. But I’ve found colonials to gold coins. So far not on my found list is bust quarter, bust half, bust dollar or Trade dollar. The only gold coin was a 1882 5 dollar liberty. Other than those missing items i have found. Here is just a few things. My Spanish reales 1864 with L, 2 cent, seated quarter. The hand full of stuff was after3 hours of detecting large cent and colonials in my hand.
The OP coin is a large fraction so it is either a 275 or a 276. I believe they have the same reverse. Yours appears to be 276. The key is the BE in LIBERTY. On 275 the B is about the same size as the E and the base of the E points into the bottom curve of the B. On the 276 the B is smaller and the base of the E points below the B. Yours appear to point below the B Another thing to check is the die orientation. Most S-276's are nearly in medal orientation with the rev close to 180 degrees rotated.
