    Hello everyone,
I went today to the 53rd Annual New York International Numismatic Convention.

    IMG_20250118_162848204-1.jpg

I was there for only 2 hours. So, it was the usual overcrowded, rude people and snobby sellers who aren't interested in someone like me who is looking not to spend hundreds or thousands on just one coin. I just went over each table and admired all of the outstanding coins which I never dare take any pictures of because it would create unnecessary looks or conversations from the dealers o_O

I had a budget of $160.00 and I stuck to it! I was satisfied with my 5-coin pickup!

    Coin #1 Ancient ($40.00)

No Sal, I have several ancient coins. About 20 ;)

I go to other conventions throughout the year. Orchid shows, Gem and Mineral shows, Metal Detecting events and normal coin shows (non ancient) and I never encounter the snobbiness such as I did today o_O

Mixed crowd. What I mean by rude is for example, I'm hovering over a display case carefully looking at coins I might be interested in. Here comes some guy and just shoves me over so he can take a look. He doesn't even say excuse me or sorry
It happened about 5 times with 5 different people! I almost grabbed one guy. I wanted to smash his face through the display case!

I don't attend any shows on Sunday. Nor do I metal detect on Sunday. That's the day I dedicate to church. Unless I'm far away traveling in another state or Puerto Rico ;)

I'm also 5'6", but that never stopped me from "barking" at someone. LOL

Ed, that was a great account of the Coin Show. The last Coin Show I attended was a similar experience. Dealers only wanted to visit with their friends and they were just looking and talking. Customers could not get close to the tables or communicate with the dealers. One of the third party certifiers was there, but he had a very selective audience also. Several of us customers/potential new customers couldn't get close. The show was in Houston, the closest one to me, and I will never go back.

I was examining a $3,500 coin in a case at the FUN show. The two dealers behind the table were so absorbed in their own conversation that they ignored me when I asked if I could see it. Just kept right on talking. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they just didn't hear me. I wasn't very assertive, and left.

It wasn't a case of deliberate rudeness (I've encountered that too), but rather of neglect.

I might have actually bought that coin. Too bad for them, huh.

At my job, I hop to attention when someone comes to my desk, even if I'm a little slow to get out of the chair at first. I'll at least acknowledge them.

If I were a coin dealer, and someone wanted to look at my $3,500 coin, you can bet I'd be attentive!

Coin shows out here in the San Francisco Bay Area have dwindled over the past twenty years or so to the point where they are small gatherings of dealers offering mostly slabbed US coins. Boring!

Back in the heyday decades of the 1980s and 90s the size of the shows and the variety of coins were much larger, with nice selections of ancient and world coins, and the atmosphere was generally relaxed and amicable.

It seems that the NYINC is a packed venue in a relatively small hall or room. That can lead to poor decorum and lack of politeness. That, plus some dealers who apparently have attitude issues can result in a most unpleasant experience on the part of the collector. I've never attended that show, but I hope to one of these years.
