Awww, that's a real drag, Parthicus ... I'm very sorry to hear that your cool Xmas coin got damaged during its journey (again, that's very sad) ... it's a fantastic looking coin too At this point, I'm very glad that I sent a comfy ol' pond-skipper to my giftee (let's see 'em try to break that fat bugger!!)
I have received some information from my patron via personal message. The coin was not damaged during shipping, the previous owner bought it with the chip already broken off and has kept it in that state without attempting repair. Here's what the previous owner has sent me: Alexius III, Comnenus Electrum trachy, Histamenon Nomisma 1081 - 1118 AD Obv: Christ seated facing on square-backed throne, hand raised, holding book of Gospels. Rev: Bust of Alexius facing, wearing crown and jeweled chlamys, holding sceptre with pelleted star and cross on globe. Sear 1893.
Even with the cracks and damage, it is still a beautiful rare coin that I would love to add to my collection.
Nice gift! Envious of that one! An AR Byzantine and an AR Ancient China are two of my Targets! Congrats!
Good luck! You are going to need it. I know where to find a couple if you ever get serious about getting one.
It's time for me to chime in here. Not sure if anyone has noticed but I've been away from the action here the last couple of weeks. I got sent to Spain very short notice - not all bad except for the wifi. I got to bring my family out towards the end was able check out Barcelona a bit. I made it home late Christmas Eve but number one priority was to pick up the pets from the kennel/cattery otherwise they would stay there until the 28th. Number two priority was to to get the gifts that trickled in at the end wrapped for my son (sadly one was delivered but we were gone. It's still at the UK post office...). Anyway Christmas was fun and a nice day to relax and be with family. Here's a shot of my son in front of the Church of Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor: Ok, kid in front of a church...not what we're here for! Now for the Secret Saturnalia! When the package arrived I learned it was from Canada and my first thought was @stevex6 and it turned out I was right! Now, he self-identified before I opened the package, but as soon as I did I knew it was him. He sent me this awesome coin (photo courtesy of Steve): Faustina II AE Sestertius Rome Mint 128-175 AD Diameter: 31 mm Weight: 23.72 grams Obverse: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, draped bust right wearing circlet of pearls Reverse: Reverse: IVNONI REGINAE S-C, Juno, veiled, standing left, holding patera & scepter; peacock standing left at feet, head reverted The coin is a little darker in hand but otherwise a faithful representation. This coin is my first coin featuring an empress (and a peacock)! I have a huge weakness for large bronzes and I am really happy with this coin and Steve's generosity. Thank you Steve!
No problemo ... the coin looks good on you Oh, and great photo of your kid in front of the church (glad that your trip and your Christmas went well) => Cheers to the New Years!!
