http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/12/21/man-sentenced-for-selling-counterfeits-century-old-coins.html And boy, is his last name missing an H or what! This is good news though. Seems like Ali buyers are no longer going unchecked. Maybe this trend will spill over into law enforcement getting IP addresses from eBay too
One step in the right direction. I hope his offense and subsequent punishment both get broad-based media publicity . . .
Article did not say anything about paying restitution. Authorities will hopfully follow the chain of his sales. Tough for me, I live in Maine.
Oh, oh, oh... but don't forget about that "post release". That's serious business! (roll eyes here). That said, this is another example of how our fellow Americans are at the very heart of the problem. No Matter how easy it is to blame the Chinese, without Americans like this individual perfectly willing to take advantage of the "opportunity", the market for their "products" would be much smaller. Supply and demand... On the other hand, it's also very hard for me to have any level of sympathy for any business, and particularly any so-called professional, fooled by such things. This isn't much different from 5-6 years ago when the two cats were traveling around the east coast selling ridiculously poor fakes, such as the 03-CC Morgan (oops, I meant "fantasy pieces") and 1804 dollars, and more than a few "dealers" hit by them had the gall to whine openly. It's not as if fakes, alterations, or other deceptions are a well-kept secret. You play, you pay....
Thanks . Dysfunctional Veteran, your original post would have produced a real problem for your participation. Yes, I can see it as the software records your changes for us. All, keep the politics , racism out of this.
I beg to differ . . . it's ten months more than the slap on the wrist that most have been getting thus far. Do you know anyone willing to risk spending 10 months in prison over a few thousand dollars in illegitimate profits? I don't, but I bet I know or have met a dozen people who would take the chance if they could rest assured little or nothing would be done if they were caught.
10 months as a guest of the US attorney general is not a vacation, even if it is in a minimum security camp (Club Fed). And 10 months is better than no months at all.
With all due respect, sir; all one needs to do is take a quick drive through certain areas in any fairly sizable city in this country to see many who are willing to risk that and more for what most consider a pittance.
I didn't see exactly what he was convicted of. If it was a felony, just having a felony conviction is more than a slap on the wrist.
Do you think this was the first time he tiptoed through the tulips? To a career criminal, 10 months is just a vacation. Chris
Another article I read said he could have got 15 years. So I bet 10 months looks real good to him. Also said he was buying the coins for $2.00 each.
I don't disagree with either of your points above, but remember that my post is referring to the importance of following through with a penalty for anyone willing to break the law, and not just those most willing to do so. There are too many out there who, absent the disincentive, will blur the lines and allow themselves to be drawn in. The demonstration of resolve this punishment conveys should be sufficient deterrent for a large number of potential offenders, but, as you point out, certainly not all.
