I really admire your ant coin. Always have. It is just so cool! Use your own numbering system. Like binary has two numbers between 1 and 10, and trinary has three...
I REALLY like this one! Great pick for the TIED 1-2 spot in your line-up! My type of coin! I got one of my latest from JA due to that Eagle/Hare design: Sicily Akragas AE Trias 23mm 8.5g 287-241 BCE Beardless Zeus Hellanios 2 Eagles hare in talons HGC 2 159 Ex: @John Anthony
Lots of fun reading through this thread! and some great coins too. Eagerly waiting to see your #1, Steve. In the meantime, Merry Christmas to all (our christmas goose (a german tradition) is already in the oven....mmm)
Oh ! and should any of you CT buddies visit France, remember my place is warm and welcoming (tea (read beer and wine) and coining are included in the daily rate) Q
Nice #2. I like your mini Noah's Ark coin. I like coins with a bit more than the original strike: counter-stamped, brockage, over-struck, ... I know you are also. Great find! I bought this one hoping it was an old collection counter-stamp. Alas, I think it was only a re-valuation stamp. No matter how many times I look at the coin and pics, I can not tell if this one has 4 or 5 dots. Another not quite right coin was over-struck - Sextans over Manheaded Bull
So true! This year I went with my family to Iceland as tourists. One of my coin e-friends lives in Iceland and if you drive around the island you would come within a a mile of his house (There is basically only one road around and it goes close to almost the whole population). He invited me to come by and we had a great evening. So, the internet is not all bad!
Well, we just pigged-out on our glutinous Christmas Eve Seafood fest!! => jumbo shrimp, crab and lobster ... yup, both coasts came to play!!
Holy crap, I'm in love with this one. Very nice addition, good find. Dutifully adding to my wishlist.
Mmmmmm...seafood. Looks like a dinner at my place. I would add fresh corn on the cob and steamed broccoli.
(December 25th) => Christmas Day #1 - Winna-Winna THESSALY, Pherai. Alexander. Tyrant Æ Chalkous 369-359 BC Diameter: 13 mm Weight: 2.07 grams Obverse: Head of Jason right, wearing petasos Reverse: ΑΛΕΞΑΝ [Δ]ΡΟ[Υ], lower leg of horse right Reference: Rogers 521; BCD Thessaly I 1314 var. (arrangement of ethnic); BCD Thessaly II 706; HGC 4, 583 Other: 4h … dark green-brown patina From the BCD Collection SIDENOTE: Merry Christmas, Coin-Gang!! At the beginning of the year I tried scoring a similar coin, but was CLIO'd ... so I was delighted when this baby showed-up shortly afterwards (CLIO's appetite had already been quenched, so I was able to score this baby at a decent price) This coin has wicked eye-appeal (dark brown patina with hints of red) ... yah, I love the coin's texture (it kinda looks like a horse hair finish!?) I have a lot of horse coins, but this baby stole my heart and has ended-up atop the stevex6 podium ... ... so please join me in congratulating, MISS 2016 => The HOOF!!
Have to say I was rooting for this one. Love THE HOOF!! Glad it made the top spot on your list. Happy X'mas to you and yours, my friend!
Well, I've gotta go wrap some X-mas presents ... I hope that everybody has a grand day (and hopefully I'll touch-base again later in the ho-ho-ho)
Oh wow. Very alluring choice for #1. Really awesome raised surface. You had a very nice haul in 2016.
Nice piece, I like the high relief hoof / leg. How do you know it is a horse vs another animal? If you boil down your collecting year, this is the one that holds them together. A hoof is something I have not seen on a coin. Unless you count a lucky penny (I know it is a cent, but this is not a US coin chat).
A very interesting coin, as well as a very unusual motif I have to say it has a special appeal. Well done!
