What would you do?

It would upset me too that he believes that his Christmas is more important than mine. It could have been a coin that you intended to gift. If he is unable to conduct business and take care of his customer during the holidays, then he should have closed his store instead of leaving it just hanging. There are many that do that this time of year.

I don't know what sort of coin it was, or how good a price $600 was, but at this point my eBay-spider-sense would be screaming "I'm never going to see this coin".

That's why I'm hesitant to send a claim just yet as I really want the coin and if he hasn't sent it they might just refund the money and I'd never see it.

That's not what I'd be thinking. I'd be thinking that he never was intending to send a coin in the first place.

What Jeff said, plus - later after the matter is settled one way or another - it will possibly be a service for you to "out" this seller so none of us pick a berry from a forbidden bush.

Not until after resolution settles the facts, though. I don't disbelieve your situation, but judgement is only for after the meal is cooked.

I sent a reply saying I'm expecting the tracking number tomorrow. If I don't get it tomorrow I'll open the case against him.

Leave negative feedback. The nasty attitude was uncalled for by the seller.

I would file now. Doesn't opening a case against them hurt in terms of, among other things, qualifying for "top seller" status and discounted eBay fees?

They only have a feedback of 69, with 73 positives and 1 negative. I don't think eBay is their livelihood.

Ugh. It's stories like this that keep me from buying anything over $20 on Ebay.

I hope it all turns out well.

I'd be a little ticked off, I'm pretty reasonable and all it would take is a preemptive message asking me if a delay was OK and I'd agree. I know that some sellers do this and mark the item as shipped when they don't ship until days later just so they don't get dinged and end up losing their selling discounts by not meeting the performance standards and imo that's not OK.

If they haven't already taken out the funds yet opening a case can get a hold put on the funds so that they can't access it until the case is settled or positive feedback is received.

I'd start action pronto. I don't cut ignoramuses such as this seller any slack. It never does any good to do so.

I'm not sure it's anything that nefarious. If you use the quick and convenient buy-postage-and-print-label feature on eBay, your package shows up as "shipped" (with a tracking number!) as soon as you print the label.

On the few occasions that I've sold lately, I've printed the label as soon as I received payment and knew the size and weight of the box -- I wasn't trying to make an impression on eBay, I was just trying to get everything ready ASAP.

Yes but when you buy and print via Ebay/Paypal it automatically loads the tracking number. Clearly this seller just marked it as shipped on Ebay but hasn't even shipped it yet as I'm pretty sure that's what they've already told OP.

Why? It's the seller's responsibility to ensure delivery. If they can't deliver, the consequences would be loss of the item and the cash from selling it, and possibly a mark on their record. Without, the seller is still out the item, may possibly get a black mark, but still has the money from the insurance payout. In both cases, the customer is out the item and refunded the money, so it makes no real difference. Insurance protects the seller only, so it should be the seller's decision to insure or not and deal with the consequences in case something goes wrong.

In this case I would agree shipping the coin should have been prioritized much higher. But, in general, there may be other people ahead in the queue who deserve to have their coins shipped first.

Ding ding ding! I will usually accept an apology and a promise the first time anything goes amiss. It's only after it becomes a pattern, or the seller is rude about it (both which are the case in this scenario) that I start getting upset about it.

No matter how badly you want this item, it's not worth the risk & aggravation.

Start the process to get your money back ASAP!

BTW, my crystal ball predicts the Seller's next communication will include the wrong tracking number.

Sadly it won't let me open a dispute as it hasn't passed the expected delivery day. :banghead:
