1702, Expedition to Vigo Bay, Betts-97, MI ii 236/18

 

As usual my contribution is GB.
A decent 1702 Vigo Shilling,
and a much less good 1702 Fourpence,
but interesting as it is another year in which one can get two different monarchs on the coinage. Weirdly I think the fourpence is the only denomination for which there are William III examples in 1702.

 

I had no 1702s.

But I have 1701!

This is more like an abstract modern coin/ ugly for Baroque Era standards of excellence. Minted during the turbulent Wars of the Spanish Succession.

This King and Friedrich II of Prussia were, "Masters of the battlefield" outgunned/ numbered 10-1/ still won the day.
Just sad his army could not annihilate the Russians at Poltava/ Ukraine 1n 1709.

 

After the hiccup I think we can go on with 1700?

A lot of my coins from this point are cobs, which are not always showing dates, so I may not be able to contribute much.

 

Sadly, I have nothing to contribute for 1699. Will have to wait until we go back one more year.

 

I have quite a few GB coins for 1699, but none in great condition. Here we have the 1699 Shilling and two Halfpennies. The latter are interesting as they show different designs with the date either in the exergue or in the legend.
