My dad showed me this coin and wondered what I thought. My first impression was MD, but as I looked closer, I wasn't so sure. What are your expert opinions? 20241128_170318.jpg 20241128_170347.jpg 20241128_170337.jpg

It looks to me like it’s a consequence of the strike. If you look on the reverse the same is in the perimeter lettering. That’s all strike doubling.

It’s doubled but not the type of doubling you want.

I have not seen anything quite like it but agree that it is not a true doubled die. I will tell him to put it in a flip as an interesting piece and keep it at that. Thank you!

Don’t put it in a flip…a waste of time and a flip. This is obvious significant circulation damage AKA : PMD. It’s also known as a spender.

Often see the bouncy double & triple on Kennedys

I did this as a learning experience. Helps to reference these until you get the hang of it sometimes.

Agreed. Holding something in a flip for reference doesn't hurt.
I still have my learning collection.
Someone will get it one of these days.

What I see is also die deterioration. Notice the back of Kennedy's neck. The perimeter lettering also shows DDD.

I did too, labeling flips “specimen - example of die deterioration” or what have you.

My intent, here, was to help to dispel the prevalent notion of younger or less experienced collectors of thinking these things have any value beyond solely an example when, if you get right down to the core of the matter, they don’t. Many similar ideas are perpetuated by new echelons of collectors and have to be dispelled repeatedly. We see it here on Coin Talk all the time.

Great idea. I’ll label a few of my ‘examples’ accordingly
