Please guess the grade of the 1945-P Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, FS or NOT FS, and + grade or star designation. Please don't forget to vote in the poll, and as always, comments welcome.
This one has a shot at 67. Looks like they spent a bit of time trying to get rid of a clash or some PIDT MS66+ FS
MS66+ FS. I’m leaning into the 5 step being defined enough. Light abrasions on the obverse with a little chatter on the outer devices for the reverse. Almost a 67.
MS 66 5FS ...I see some die polish lines and suggestions of it being semi-pl but I don't think there is enough there for a star designation....also some spotting and a larger hit on the reverse prevents it from getting to 67
I think it depends a bit on the reviewers. Some may be distracted by something that another reviewer is OK with. Normally, die maintenance shouldn't affect the grade (like removing a clash), but may affect desirability (unless you're a variety hunter). These anomalies precede the dings, dents, and chatter that come after coining.
That one dink on the reverse is the killer I almost said 64/64+ because of it but went with MS65FS and on that note I did give it Full Steps but only because he included the close up the full reverse pic. The other reverse pic not quite clear enough to show it well
Went with my gut on this one. 67*FS You got robbed on like 4 of these but I feel this one gets a boost for the eye appeal and semi PL surfaces. Only thing distracting to me was the carbon spots on Monticello which make me think 66 but with them being on reverse I think the obverse keeps this at 67.
You raise a point that sometimes, or at least more often with War Nickels, causes me to hesitate. Laminations and discoloration (not really carbon spots, but staining and streaks in the planchet). Do graders get bothered by these or look past them? I don’t see consistency, especially with many of the specimens Lehigh posts. At least, consistency that appears present in other years and denominations. Maybe it’s just me…
REVEAL: 1945-P Jefferson Nickel NGC MS66 And to everyone's great surprise, NGC did not award the coin full steps. Nobody got this one, and only two people agreed that the coin should not have full steps.
~1 & 2 were both not FS and that is what I said in the original thread. ~3 was FS and that is what I had guessed originally ~4-6 were not FS while I had originally said they were ~7 was not FS...this one I said not FS in the original thread but changed to FS in the GTG ~8 was not FS while I had originally said it was ~9 and 10 we are still waiting for the reveal and the post....I figured both were FS .....overall just one full step so far...amazing (not in a good way)
