I'm not mocking them but they are a "nerdy" group. I choice to use word "peeps" over "nerd" this time. Go to any coin show and the EAC guys and gals are always the smartest people in the room.
The best memories in the room can grade and attribute a full series from their heads. The smartest people in the room know where to find that information, and don't need to specialize as a result.
I'll take exception to that and I'll bet many others here do also. EAC folks are specialized collectors who get a great deal of enjoyment from their hobby and sharing information with others. Just because they know more about what they collect does not make them the "smartest people in the room." I prefer to think of a generalist such as: (insert nominations here ______________) should be considered much smarter. Anyone here can become a "peep" in whatever field they choose. It takes time and study.
I buy some coins from an EAC specialist for my type set. Chris McCawley knows his stuff. But I am completing my FE/IHC set through another dealer who knows HIS stuff. Angel Dee's (Andy and Alynne Skrabalak) are every bit as good as Chris. Neither are particularly good in the other's specialities. But WOW do they know their own stuff.
I have a Redbook set of large cents (missing one coin). But I wouldn't call myself a Sheldon peep. Without Noyes and Grellman I know very little. Here's a slot filler I acquired earlier this year. Lance.
I really can't believe this is a thread. Question, Would you rather buy your coins from a moron or would you buy from someone who knows what they are doing? I tend to deal with a specialist or at least know a lot more than I do (a lot).
I prefer morons. I have no problem buying that matte proof lincoln off ebay, that someone has listed as bu. But for someone to be a moron, you yourself shouldnt be one. In which case I completely understand buying from someone who knows what they are doing. I have bought from both morons and those who know far more than me. But come on, every once in awhile you see the too good to be true item, that actually is something great. You arent gonna find that with someone who's been doing it for 50+ years, usually
My question was an honest, and I thought obvious, question. And it was not in regard to your use of the word peeps, but rather your use of Sheldon in conjunction with it. I say that because Sheldon, used in a sentence like that, could refer to at least a couple of different things, and possibly more. So I merely wanted to know to which of those you were referring.
That's impressive, which one are you missing? Strawberry leaf? Starred reverse? Reeded edge? 96 stemless?
LOL. I guess I shouldn't say Redbook if I don't have any of the ultra-rarities. "Major varieties" is probably incorrect too. It is simply a Dansco album with popular varieties and I am missing the '93 Liberty Cap. Pretty modest set. Lance.
