As we have only a couple days now to Christmas, I do want to let you all know that we have one participant still waiting for their SS gift, as the Post Office is late on delivering that. I am hoping that it gets there tomorrow but I fear it might be on the 24th. I am pleased to see most have waited to open theirs and hope that continues. Please do know that you need to also take pics, post here and tell your SS thank you. Each SS did go and try their best to get something their recipient would like and I'm glad to know that. This year there were 22 participants.
Mine is sitting next to me on the Table. The packaging gives me an Idea on whats inside, there are a few 2x2 and what looks like it might be a slab but it's the wrong size and feel. LOL I am wait'in!
Well, in a few hours we are leaving town for a week. So as my household was quiet, I unwrapped my gifts. An absolutely stunning variety of fun coins. Little bit of everything. Japan: Mexico Belgian on a US steel planchet! Stunning France: An ancient: Philippine Peso (always wanted one) And yes, of course….. one so called dollar. A 1935 pony express token. Seriously…. My Secret Santa outdid themselves. Please accept my warmest thank you. These gifts are truly appreciated and will be hard to beat. Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas. I look forward to seeing the gifts.
I really like that Japanese square coin. I have been waiting 10 days now almost there. I was out of town over the weekend celebrating my family Christmas. I left my SS gift at home so that helped me temptation. My mom, siblings, siblings in law, and nephews don't share my interest in coins. My mom has given me a few coin gifts though.
Aha! Not just some piddling late Roman bronze, but a silver denarius from the 2nd century, it looks like! I can't make out the inscriptions, but the portrait looks like Antoninus Pius or (admittedly in a longshot) Clodius Albinus. Probably the former. I'm sure the Ancients folk can help with that if you need it. Particularly if you post pix of both sides on the Ancients forum. Edit: no, wait! I suppose that "SS" written on the flip could mean not just Secret Santa, but Septimius Severus. He was another bearded chap. But he had more of a forked beard. Those more seasoned than I will know the answer. Yes, they're really quite fun. I have a gold one.
(Not from my CT Santa) Wrapped gift in the office. I thought it was a Christmas gift from a coworker, so I opened it (12/24 is close enough). It was indeed from a coworker: Bonnie, the relief night auditor who covers my nights off. But it was a birthday rather than Christmas gift, so I’m four days premature. Oh well. I initially had no idea what it was- at first glance, it looked like an Asian ivory carving! Turns out it’s some kind of cake, about the size of an elongated smartphone. Looks like shortbread, but is ever so slightly soft when I pinch it. It’ll be interesting to try it, but it’s almost too pretty to eat. Aha! A “Southern Tea Cake”, apparently? I’m a Southerner and don’t know what that is. Now I’m intrigued. Apparently it’s a vanilla-laden confection akin to a sugar cookie, and has a place in African-American history. Cool by me. I like shortbread, butter cookies, and sugar cookies.
I am thrilled to be soon to see a number of presents that you have received from your SS on here soon. Hopefully all will have their pictures posted by the end of the year!
Ah. Good. Back to remedial “Identifying Bearded Roman Emperors by Facial Recognition” class for me, then! Oh well. At least I got the denomination and century right. LOL And I did get my corrected edit in before the truth was revealed. So I got it right, but only belatedly.
I opened mine today. So nice --- Silver!!! and world coins !!!! I think my favorites, aside from the very lovely Maria Theresia Thaler, of course, are the Japanese Yen and Sen, the Constantin I Roman Campgate (City Gate) -- my very first one, and I think both the Cuban 5 centavos from 1915 and the Haiti 5 centimes from 1904 are great also! My SS tried to fool me with a copper 1943 cent, but yeah, it's copper plated over steel. But also I never had one before, so that is also a neat newby type of coin. For those who don't know the Japanese ones, these are nice because they are from a couple of 20th century eras (by who ruled Japan), and from l to r, starting at the top in the pic is a 50 Yen coin from 1956, which was year 31 of the Showa era (Showa was ruled by Emperor Hirohito). Hirohito ruled from December 25, 1926 (Christmas Day!!!) until his death on January 7, 1989. Then I have a 10 Sen, also from Showa era, year 7 (1932), a 5 Sen from year 11 (1922) of Taisho era, which was the era preceding Hirohito's reign and which was ruled by Emperor Yoshihito, son of the Meiji Emperor. His reign was not super long, only from July 30, 1912 to December 25, 1926, but a lot did happen during that time and his son Hirohito got a lot of experience early on because Yoshihito was a sickly man and some time in 1919 actually stopped doing his duties, with most of it being entrusted either to the Japanese Diet or his son. Yoshihito was only in his 40s when he passed on. After the 5 Sen in the Taisho era, I have three 10 Sen coins from the Showa era again. The first one (top right) is from 1946 (year 21) and the bottom two are from years 15 and 16 (1940, 1941). Thank you, SS for these coins. I am enjoying them.
One more sleep to go. It is four hours from midnight as I am typing this but I plan to be bed before then.
Opened my Santa gift tonight. I think this is the first coin from Luxembourg I've ever had. I also once had a nice sized collection of Latin American coins, so the coins from Guatemala and Venezuela were nice to see. The Canadian dime will be repatriated on my brother in laws next trip to see his mother in Canada. I also save euro coins for the same purpose in hopes I get to vacation in Europe some day! Thanks Santa for taking the time to select a few coins and send them my way. This is absolutely my favorite tradition here on coin talk!
