This one is closer to yours with the possible grease. $39 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1857-FLYING...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
I can't see the images in those eBay auctions just now, because my connection just slowed way down, but I can see the titles. "VF details" and "XF details" are a far cry from the details of the coin in the OP of this thread. That has AU58 to low MS details, and attractive toning, even if the toning is secondary toning. That isn't to say the eBay coins aren't a fair deal at their respective prices- dunno- can't see the pix right now- but I strongly doubt they have the eye appeal and detail of the OP coin. That Great Southern coin on the previous page had little eye appeal, being dark and porous with environmental damage. I'd have been happy if it were one of my metal detector finds, but I would never have bought it. Nothing posted in this thread has reasonably compared to the OP coin yet, despite that coin's issues. The cleaning on the OP coin does not turn me off (admittedly, I might not even have noticed it). The only thing that speaks against it to me is that hit at 12:00 on the obverse, near the rim.
To me, the OP pics look like the coin is in a holder and that is where most of the scratch marks are, not on the coin.
Yes, and in addition to the coin being weakly struck, the reverse photo seems to be out of focus. Exactly. MS details is a horse of a different color. That's why I paid a hundred bucks for that holey one. Not all "details" coins are created equal, and despite its issues, the coin in the OP of this thread is a prince among "problem" pieces.
I'll take your word on the cleaning, Larry, although it does look a bit better once you correct for the poor White Balance in the original image (by getting the background color closer to real; the coin itself follows suit): It's quite interesting that the extraordinarily weak areas on each face are directly opposite each other on the planchet. One ought to really consider whether the two might be related to each other when deciding whether or not it's damage.... S-11 doesn't seem to carry much for a premium despite its' scarcity, but it seems pretty definitively the overdate.
That coin should be liberated from its scuffy slab and go to PCGS for a TrueView, in my opinion. Then again, you might not think it worth that, since it's going to get a "Details" grade, regardless. But at the very least I think it deserves a better set of photos, with the slab scuffs polished out as much as possible and the reverse of the coin in better focus.
I just bought this one for $27 plus &2.87 shipping on eBay last week if this helps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Oh I totally agree. I just happen to get one and I wanted to throw my one cents in Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Understandable. I like Flying Eagle cents. I'll bet yours looks better in hand. Have you gotten it yet? Looks like the white balance was off in the photos, to where the coin almost appears to be in a greyscale image. Almost.
I think most are over looking the point of the SNOW 11 from completed auctions of the Snow-11 over non variety in ms63 (thats what I found in a quick search) no snow number 1293 (though looks to be clashed) to low of 646 with snow number of s-11 $1645 https://coins.ha.com/itm/a/1231-7130.s So there is a premium for the variety
Based on recent past sales on Heritage for AU/UNC details coins, I'm going to go with anywhere between $150 and $275. Probably somewhere a little north of $200. Maybe a little more if the luster is still intact, a little less if it's really been stripped. I don't know why everybody is deliberately lowballing this coin. That said, I think all this coin really has going for it is the excellent detail on the eagle and the overdate. I don't like the orange highlights, and the weak areas are very distracting to me. Whatever's going on on the obverse where STATES should be doesn't do a lot for me, either, although I'd be much happier if it was a strikethrough than PMD. Anyone who buys this is going to be looking for the overdate, IMO. Is it possible to have the variety attributed on the holder with a details grade?
