Here's the future of mint commemoratives if they continue at their current pace. http://www.apmex.com/Product/14078/Gold_US_Mint_Commemorative_500_Coins_Years_of_our_Choice.aspx They'll end up being traded based on denomination without regard to what is actually on the coin.
Er well in 1918 they did a half dollar featuring Lincoln, but that was to celebrate the anniversary of Illinois's statehood, not Lincoln's birth. Not that there's anything saying an event or person can't be commemorated more than once. There were commemoratives in 1904 celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition... and again in 2004, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the same thing. Also Columbus discovery of America was arguably celebrated twice, in 1892 & 1893 (technically celebrating the Columbian Expo, but indriectly celebrated Columbus's discovery) and again in 1992.
Somebody should reread their history book. The Pony Express began in 1860 so that would be the 150th anniversary.
