I have never tried it but silver would have been one of the most antibacterial snacks you could have at the time ;)

I know sometimes to check the coin/ people would do test cuts/ even bite into gold coins:inpain:
I once showed some a Mouton d'or from John II of France/ it was struck in 1350 height of "Black Death" plague. He asked me if was afraid of catching plague from coin:shame: I said/ heck no/ I never touch my coins/ always keep them in SAFLIPS. (which is true)
But how anyone can believe that the germs would survive for 800 years......

Now that would be an interesting question for an epidemiologist.

Knowing you, I'd guess that your moulton d'or is mint state (as is mine). Hence it probably didn't circulate among plague carriers.

Still it might be possible that bacterial spores could be preserved on one.

All I can offer is my usual GB stuff. I have at least one example of all the different denominations for 1708, but I think this is the most attractive - a halfcrown:

1707, Pope Clemente XI raises the column and base of a monument to Emperor Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161) from ruins in Rome.

Wasn't that the attempt that failed as they didn't use proper engineering methods? The entire column was destroyed in the attempt I recall.
